~* Strawberries, Cream and Social UnFAIRities *~

Prior warning: This revu has nothing to do with the product itself, so if you are looking for details of use, ingredients, etc the please don’t expect to find them here. Although I still hope you will read this revu…for once I’m not writing about useless things :D

Once upon a time…and some questions

Reasons piling on top of the overloaded washing baskets, my parents were stressed, and we needed a maid. So the search began. After a lot of phone calls and contacts, finally koi mil gayi (un/fortunately it wasn’t Jadoo’s sister)…and everyone let out that most needed breath of relief. But one look at the woman and my grandmother said “par voh gori nahi hai!” (but she’s not fair!). Now as much as I love my dadima dearest I couldn’t help but get annoyed at the stupidity of the situation. We needed someone good, hard-working and honest. Why the hell did she need a fair complexion? Call me ignorant I seriously doubt that statistics to prove that lighter skin makes you work more efficiently.

This aroused questions in mind as to why everyone is so obsessed with becoming fair. The matter worsens in martial affairs. When picking out a suitable bride “the fairest of them all” is the most sought after. In all the jeevan saathi searching columns on newspapers the colour of complexion is always mentioned. Who cares about the colour??? You must have heard this several times, but what lies on the exterior really does not matter. Anyone who judges you on your colour is definitely not worth changing yourself for.

Social Injustices

But not being satisfied with what you have is a part of human nature, and it can’t be changed…although the effort can be made to try and stop looking at things so materialistically. Why do you want to change your skin colour? For other people or for yourself? Social pressures seem to be the main thing. I love India and everything, there’s so much to love about it and so much to be proud of…but I hate some of these traditions. People with fairer skin are always preferred, be it to do with marriage or jobs.

Do girls prefer men who are fairer? Honestly speaking, up till now all Gladrags Man Hunt models (I talk about then a lot don’t I?) have had a fair complexion. But whatever happened to the wonderful and mysterious “tall, dark and handsome stranger” theory? Why aren’t those golden, coppers, tans, earthy tones chosen over skin without colour? But as always women have it worse.

The Products…

Young women are the most vulnerable and most under pressure to do something about the way they look. And products such as Fair and Lovely were introduced into the market and mainly targeted at these people. The advertisements that are made for such products are so stupid. I don’t understand how they even work. A girl magically charms everyone and becomes an airhostess after using Fair and Lovely; another girl becomes a cricket commentator after using this cream; another girl magically manages to do something else after becoming fairer, etc, etc, I think you catch my drift! Surely all these things could be achieved anyway…Its just that vital element of SELF-CONFIDENCE that was missing from all these girls’ lives. In the ads there is usually some other adult or parent or someone who makes some disheartening comment of the poor girl’s dark complexion, hence forcing her to believe that she is not worthy to go out into the world and do what she wants until she makes her skin lighter. This is rubbish. It’s all about believing in yourself. Anything is possible with the right frame of mind. Don’t say easier said then done. It’s as easy to do as you want it to be.

Worldwide?

And the most ironic thing about the whole matter is that whilst people in the east are hopelessly trying everything they can to become fairer, people in the west are taking the same fruitless approaches to darkening their skin! Come to the UK and you’ll find tanning sprays, lotions, beds and studios galore…

And that brings me to the end of a review which I think may have some sense to it. Hopefully you read it, and enjoyed it. And I’m really sorry if it has nothing to do with the product, but I had no where else to post it + it is related in some sense. I have an insatiable hunger for new views…so give me some food for thought (ie. Leave me a comment)!!! Personally, the only cream I like is the delicious kind which goes with strawberries and summer days :D

PS- I apologize to all those people who ran to the dictionary to look up “unfairities”; you may have noticed that it doesn’t exist. And you may also have noticed that I have a tendency to make up words. Continuously running in my blood is this weird habit…maybe something to do with residing in the land of Oxford. ;)
