Fanaa Fanaa yeh dil hua Fanaa

Fanaa is perhaps the only way Bollywood could have made up for an absolutely lacklustre first half of 2006. Sure, there were hits and some above average movies that missed the bus too - but nothing besides RDB really made you sit up and notice a movie. Fanaa does just that to you. And it sets a standard that the many big movies that will hit the screens in the second half of the year will find hard to surpass. I wouldn’t be very surprised if this finishes as the best of the best movies of 2006.

Fanaa has a number of factors going in favor of it. The film is expectedly brilliant technically, with outstanding cinematography by Ravi Chandran . One could perhaps look at the movie as the most colorful movie, and this makes it a movie that looks wonderful. Besides just looking wonderful, Fanaa also comes out being well above average too. The brilliance from behind-the-camera crew is ably fronted up by the performers in front, to make what is captured by the camera as good as it has come out to be.

With arguably the best music of the year so far, the brilliance of the music is further exaggerated by wonderful choreography, fleet footed dancing of Kajol [Des Rangila], and perhaps one of the best integration of songs into the narrative of the movie in recent years.Music director Jatin-Lalit excel with the songs for sure suitably aided by very apt and brilliant lyrics .

About the movie itself, the storyline is simple - but the characters are not necessarily so.

The movie tells the story of a blind Kashmiri girl Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) who comes to Delhi with a bunch of friends to perform at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on the Republic day.

In Delhi, their tour guide is Rehan (Aamir Khan), a colourful, joyful, flirtatious young man with a poetic line or a couplet for every situation.

To say that Kajol-Amir, who show some amazing chemistry here, have done outstanding work in the film is an understatement. Kajol´s work here easily ranks among her best performances. She is brilliant and adequate in an author-backed role.Amir excels in his role.

The movie draws a smooth climax, which is not quite unpredictable, but still quite effective. Perhaps the director does deserve credit for not going overboard as it happens so often with Hindi cinema.

Go for it!
