Its perfectly fine if you dont reach in time for the movie and miss the beginning. In fact try your level best to miss at least the first one hour of the movie. I promise you, you wont miss anything exclusive.. It covers a very boringly portrayed, the usual wooing and falling in love process lapped in heavy shero shayari and all that. The only difference here being that the girl (Kajol) is blind, and shes hardly convincing at that.
Had this been handled by Ram Gopal Varma, he would have wound up this one hour session in 15-20 mins and got on to the main story quickly. Thats why just I love him. His Ek Haseena Thi is my all time favorite. Not a moment of boredom in that. No wasting time on unnecessary crap.
But this being a Yash Raj film, I guess extra time on luv-shuv is expected... I had liked Karan Johars Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.... though.
Coming back to Fanaa... post-interval the story takes off well..
When Kajol does not have to do her blind act any more, she starts behaving a bit normal, much to our relief. The little kid is extremely cute and has done an excellent job. Suits perfectly well in the role as Aamir Khans son. Rishi Kapoor too fits well in his role as a Kashmiri father of Kajol.
Aamirs character in the second half is very different from the one he plays in the first half. In the second half of the film, Aamir Khan is at his Best. He runs the show. I can watch his scenes n number of times. In the second half he plays a role of a terrorist who is caught in two minds.
On one hand he feels obliged towards his so-called mission of Azaad Kashmir. The mission which demands his whole loyalty, the mission that doesnt allow him to give any importance to personal relationships, the mission for which he has been psychologically trained to kill ANYBODY.
On the other hand he earnestly wishes to live a normal guilt free life with his wife(Kajol) and his child, whom he has left 7 years back for his so-called mission. They are completely unaware of his other side and live under the impression that he(Aamir) has accidently died in a bomb blast.
Aamir who had managed to break free from the shackles of his emotional past and moved on in life to become the slave of his mission, one fine day finds himself caught in a twist of destiny. While working on one such major destructive mission in Kashmir, injured and helpless, caught in a snowstorm, he knocks on a door for shelter. Now do I need to say, who opens the door...
Though Kajol has gained her eyesight thru operation and can see Aamir now, she fails to recognize him. As 7 years back when he was in her life, she was blind, not just in love but also otherwise, and so had never seen him.
Aamirs character is quite complex as he plays a ruthless cold blooded killer, an angry man with little patience on one side and on the other hand a soft hearted caring husband and a doting father, who doesnt want the shadow of his dreadful life to fall on them.
My favourite scenes, most of them bring out the different shades of Aamirs character..... (Warning!!!!! Im revealing the plot to quite an extent)
When Aamir flares up at the kid and Kajol.
When Aamir is ready to leave and the kid tries to stop him. Aamir breaks down.
When Kajol slaps Aamir.
Scenes where Aamir cries. (In almost all his good films, Aamir has a scene where he breaks down. viz. Dil Chahta Hai, Rang de Basanti)
Aamirs outburst when Rishi Kapoor falls off the cliff.
When Kajol helplessly watches Rishi Kapoors body floating and passing by beneath the transparent ice.
Aamirs instant reaction when Kajol shoots him. I like this movie for Aamirs performance in the second half. I forgive Kunal Kohli for the first half.
