The fame multiplex opened to an almost housefull hall on the first day first show of fashion. Eagerly I was waiting for the story to begin..as this was a madhur bhandarkar film. I did watch his Page3 before and liked that a lot.
The story began with priyanka chopra - a small town girl with high ambitions of becoming a model..(i wonder why every other ambitious women in movies now a days are strictly a small-town-girl...remember the bipasha basu character from bachhna- e- haseeno? Metropolitan girls these days are not ambitious enough or what?) Priyanka comes to Mumbai and finds it a bit difficult to crack the so-called beauty market initially. Quite expectedly, her father did not support her decision and after some days her in-laws in Mumbai find it difficult to cope up with her late night parties. Quite realistic, isnt it? Who wd tolerate the presence of a party-bound niece specially when his own daughter is a school going child? That too when that niece is modelling for some saucy calenders!! Wd u have tolerated that?
Expectedly, Priyanka shifts to the apartment of her new found love. In the mean time she was able to manage the attention of a fashion tycoon who can make or brake models. On the other hand, she faced apprehensive attitudes from the reigning ramp-queen Kangna. After some time, expectedly, she developed a tiff with her boyfriend while trying to focus more on her career.
Now, one thing I cant really understand is, why all the career centric women are portrayed as heartless callous in all the time in movies? Why all the directors think that women cant keep balance with their personal and professional life?? May be our society is not yet ready to accept professionally successful and balanced women. I wonder if people like bhanderkar would make anything resembling someone like indra nooyi !! Perhaps not. As the industry is still obsessed with troublesome models like gitanjali kashyap.
The lateral stories of kangna and mugdha are also interesting. Kangna is again in a abusive relationshipand an drug addict. Then she faces wardrobe-malfunction and ends up in a rehab. While mugdha, a struffling model marries her college friend turned fashion designer who is a guy. (after seeing the movie I wonder if all the male fashion designers in India are guy or what !! In the movie there were three. And all of them have the traits of a woman in them...guess the leading ladies were not enough for bhandarkar)
Again, expectedly, Priyanka got exploited by the fashion tycoon arbaaz in her journey to the fame. For the next one hr she goes through depression, attitude-problems, drug-addiction, drug directed sex etc. Here, I wondered why a black-coloured person was shown as Priyankas drug-addicted lust interest.why? Does the colour of the skin decides the character of a person? Why not a white male instead?
Anyway, thankfully, by the end of the movie Priyanka regains her previous/original self thanks to the support of her family and friends and ends up as an international model scorching the Paris ramps.
A good story overall. Quite entertaining too. But I would love to see some matured and balanced women in some lead roles in the bollywood movies some day.
