Those days are over!

INTRODUCTION

As some one said that’the child is the father of man’ or something like that, I think that whatever we did and read in childhood will have everlasting experience in our minds as long as we live.  When I was a child, I used to read lots of books.  It may be because of the fact that there was no computer or cable at that time.  I didn’t even play or watch cricket or football those days.

But as I do all these things these days, I am sure that I will not get that much time for reading on these days.  You may not believe, but I loved’Dracula’ right from the beginning when I used to go to the library and take horror and detective novels when I were a kid.

1) MARVEL, DC & DIAMOND COMICS

As I used to care about superheroes very much, these two comics were the most important part of my life.  I read Spiderman, Batman, Robin, Superman, Siver Surfer, Human Torch, Thor, Hurricane, Sub Mariner etc without any disturbance.  As I had nothing else for entertainment, I continued reading it for a long time.

I also used to read the Diamond comics whenever I went somewhere in train.  Whenever I reach the railway station, I buy some comics and read it while travelling.  Chacha Chowdary, Billo, Pinki, Sabu all had been my favourite characters.  The presence of Phantom, He man and Mandrake in the comics makes it even better.  I can also remember something named Raj Comics which my cousin bought for reading.

TINTIN, ASTERIX & SONIC COMICS

I loved Tintin comics very much may be because of Tintin’s hairstyle.  He has got more brains than he seems to and his dog Snowy, the captain and the detectives add some colourful jokes to the story.  I have read most of the Tintin stories and I forgot the name of my favourite among them.  Oh my God, but the price was Rs.110.

Asterix is my all-time favourite comic book even if I didn’t like the movie on it.  Obleix is my favourite character and not to forget Dogmatix, Getafix the druid, Cacofonix the bard and chief Vitalstatistix who fears that sky may fall on his head.  The fight between the Gauls and the Romans are really funny to watch.  I did read almost all of these comics.  Only problem was that one comics did cost Rs.120 at that time which was very high compared to the other comics.  Atleast this is worth the price.

Sonic the Hedgehog was really a special character for me during the childhood days.  Who could expect a hedgehog and a fox as heroes?  The adventures of him and his pal Tails were quite interesting as they were different from others due to the high speed and agility they got.  The most interesting thing was that the book was available at Rs.50.

2) OTHER PERIODIC BOOKS

Other comics included Tinkle and Balarama, Malamangalam, Poompaatta etc which seemed to be the Malayalam versions of Tinkle as well as the Amar Chitra Katha and there was Champak too.  I think that they were the famous books of that time.

I had so much of these books that my mother gave it them to my cousin as there was not enough space at home to store them.  I used to get Malayalam books for free as I take them from the neighbourhood, but still I used to buy some much of them so that my parents always get angry at me whenever they see me reading the books again and again.

CONCLUSION

Aesop’s Fables, Panchatantra, Birbal tales and Tennali Raman tales were among my favourites for some time, but I got bored after reading it for some days.  There was also the Jataka tales.  I used to read extracts from Mahabharata and Ramayana which I enjoyed very much.

I never liked Tarzan and I didn’t care much for Jungle book after reading some parts of them.  I used to wait for some one who went outside the state or country to come back with some comics.  Thus I also got Laurel & Hardy comics as well as Richie Rich and Casper.

My favourites list were longer than anything else I have ever seen.  So I will stop by here and I will say that the best among them surely was’Asterix’ which left me yelling for more comics.you can get nothing better than that.if my childhood days were still here, I can’t imagine what else would I have read.
