Usually the first glimpse a perspective employer sees of a person is what is written on his or her resume.
If he or she has done it sloppily, often times that resume may be looked over in favor of one that is neater and easier to read.
When you go to fill out applications, whether for work or anything else, make sure you are prepared with the necessary documentation to allow you to accurately do the task.
I will focus mainly on the application for employment in this article, because once you master that, then you can apply most of the rules to filling out any other type of application.
Materials
If you are filling out an application for employment, make sure you have any past employment dates and descriptions with you or have them memorized. I usually prefer to bring a copy of my resume along with me to insure that my dates match. After a few years, the exact dates can become confusing if you have several places that you have worked.
You will also need any identification that may be required of you. Some places want to make a copy of these to affix to your applications.
If there is a possibility that references will be needed, have a list ready complete with phone numbers and addresses.
I also like to bring my own ink pen, blue or black ink is what most places ask for. Some have their own pens but most of the time I usually get stuck with the one that does not write that well, so make sure you have one of your own should it be required of you.
And above all, write neatly and try to avoid making mistakes. Allow yourself enough time to fill out the application so that you do not have to rush, this will help keep errors to a minimum.
