Well the annual farce called Filmfare awards seems to continue without any respite for the poor audience. Thanks to the arrogance of the Times of India group, we the poor suffering Indian audience would still be subjected to such inanities. The good thing this time was that there were some deserving winners. The worst thing was coming up with some strange categories just to satisfy the bloated egos of some stars.
No issues on the Best Actor. Hrithik deserved it hands down. I am no Hrithik fan, in fact I hated him in MPKDH, but this was certainly a superb performance by him. Ajay Devgan put up an equally good performance in Gangajaal, but there is a difference here. Brilliant as Ajay?s performance was it was in a role which is child?s play for him, the honest angry cop. But Hrithik took a big risk, going against his usual Mills & Boon lover boy image and he did it very well.
It was the first time he was attempting such a role, and he came out with flying colors. But Koi Mil Gaya as the Best Film? That?s a different thing. Entertaining as it was KMG is certainly not award winning material. Its high time Filmfare learns to distinguish between a great movie and an award winning one.
The Academy awards don?t go to the big blockbusters, but movies which are in a league of their own. If that had been the case movies like Star Wars, the Indiana Jones series, Terminator-2, Matrix should have been logically sweeping the awards. Again the Best Actress award goes to Preity Zinta in KHNH. Good as an actress she is, again Preity?s performance just doesn?t hold a candle to Urmila?s in Bhoot. Urmila did full justice to a complex multi layered role, and she deserved the Best Actress award. But all she gets is a Critics Award. I don?t understand what this Critic?s award is for.Let the best person win the award in that category. Why another critic?s award? Doesn?t make any sense.
Again the Best Director award should have gone to J.P.Dutta for LOC or Prakash Jha for Gangajaal, but guess they are not the swiss romance specialists so that rules them out. And Best Newcomer Award to Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra for what, showing some skin. Now comes the most idiotic awards constituted just to pander to some star egos.
Special Performance Award: What the hell is this award for? Just to please Ms.Kareena Kapoors bloated ego. Maybe Filmfare thought that with all her movies flopping like nine pins at the box office, this should satisfy her. And the most ridiculous thing is that this award was given for a move released in 2004. Does the Times of India Group think the audience of India are such morons to take this nonsense? Kareena doing a protitute?s role is not a landmark please. If you want to look at a brilliant portrayal of a prosttute, watch Sharmila Tagore in Mausam.
Power Award: We Amitabh fans know that he is the best in the industry and it doesn?t need an award from Filmfare to tell us that. And Shahrukh, just because he didn?t get the Best Actor, should he be given this to satisfy his bloated ego.
It high time Filmfare does a serious rethink on their awards or else it going to degenerate into an unlimited farce. It has become the platform for showing off the bloated egos of some stars who are personal favourites of Filmfare. And stop comparing this with Oscars, Filmfare is miles behind in every aspect.
