Fisherman’s Local is a very homely yet exotic place to have a few drinks and some food. Within walking distance of the beach, it is open in front yet that does not rob it of privacy as it is within a compound.
The best part is the paintings on the walls-very much in Mario style. They almost tell a story of fishing. It is very pleasant to sit and look at the cheerful and colourful depictions of fish and fishermen and women and boats and all.
As with everywhere in Goa, there are many White skinned foreigners. At times, one feels like a foreigner in one’s own country in Goa!
The seating and atmosphere is casual and offers privacy due to the romantic lighting.
The owner who was also serving was friendly but overworked as he was attending to all the diners. These days labour is hard to find in India also-in many places(even in this one, I’m sure) most of the servers, cooks are from Nepal or Bangladesh.
There was a large friendly old dog which made it feel even more homely.
The toilet was fairly clean.
We ordered a fish thali and some other dishes. I can’t say the food was spectacular though. It is supposed to be home made according to the visiting card of the place. Kingfish is popular. They have all the local dishes but we don’t like the use of vinegar and so I suppose we did not try any of those. As with all the other restaurants there, Punjabi has become "local" all over!
One thing is for sure: it is a family enterprise as the owner told us how they go fishing and many other tales.
The prices seem reasonable. Most dishes are around 150-180. The sizzlers are more expensive-about Rs. 200 plus. There are many snacks and non-alcoholic beverages too.
I was told they make their own feni(both coconut and cashew)-however, it was too late as we’d already had our drinks. They have a good menu for drinks, in any case.
A suggestion is to use some anti mosquito cream before your visit as we were attacked by many of them. The owner did put a tortoise coil but it smells terrible.
