The 70s was definitely one of the best decade as far as the Hindi film industry was concerned. The movies made then had a lot of dramatic punch. There were romantic movies, dramatic ones, court room dramas, action/adventure capers, realistic stuff ... you name it and it was there. Definitely a great period for Hindi cinema.
Deewar: This movie established Amitabh as an angry young man though Zanjeer before it had brought the image to the fore. A perfect screenplay by Salim-Javed and brilliant performances by all, this one is a topper on my list.
Sholay: Grand canvas of epic proportions, Sholay till date enjoys a cult status. Te characterizations, screenplay, direction, action, dialogues, comedy ... everything about this film was just GREAT. A lot of filmmakers tried emulating Sholay but with little success.
Anand: A tragedy that made you laugh at death. The protagonist is dying because of cancer and he looks at death with a twinkle in his eye. Hrishida’s genius was at full display here, capably aided by brilliant performances, and soulful music.
Johnny Mera Naam: This film marked Dev Anand’s last days of glory. A taut lost and found drama. This movie directed by Vijay Anand was a great entertainer.
Trishul: A family drama about an illegitimate son going hammer and tongs at his father is a mini-classic. Again a taut script by Salim-Javed and direction by Yash Chopra (those days he dared to deviate), Trishul is amongst my favorite movies simply for tha fact that the performances are heartfelt. It also had some lovely music though that faded under the impact of the scorching on-screen chemistry of Amitabh, Sanjeev Kumar and Shashi Kapoor.
