We know for a FACT that a majority of movies made in the 80s were worth throwing in the trash and never looked at EVER again! Who can forget the hilariously pathetic PT dances, and the 100 extras dancing in the background wearing the exact same outfits! Nor can anyone forget the thousands of useless family dramas where one Sati-Savitri kinda bahu aka Bhenjish stri gets to be tortured by her cruel and Lalita-Pawarish kind of saas.
And of course, NO ONE can forget the era of Disco Dancing?better described as Jhatka Start dancing or the Heros and Heroines with the loud and please-spare-me-from-the-torture kind of acting! Whether it?s the horribly obnoxious silky-shiny chamak-dhamak outfits, or it?s the Kaleidoscope-ish camera angles?these are the features that remind me of the movies made in the 1980s!
BUT?and that?s a Big but( err?not referring to Asha Parekh?s you-know-what?hehe), even though it is VERY hard to believe this, there were some good movies made even in this decade! Shocked huh? Well, here follows a list of movies that I felt are Hatke from the typical 80s movies.
NUMBER 5: Chasme Baddoor
For those of you who don?t remember, this was a brilliant comedy?kind of a spoof of hindi movies I thought. Starring Farookh Sheikh and Deepti Naval, this movie was cross between commercial and parallel cinema, with funny moments aplenty! The story about the love story of common people, the movie?s realism was its greatest appeal. With excellent performances from the cast and interesting scenes one after the other, this movie is simply worth applause!
NUMBER 4: Khoobsurat
The movie is as beautiful as its name and more! The movie, I believe, is Rekha?s most brilliant comic role! The story about a family following a?military? kind of lifestyle, which goes for a toss when Manju( Rekha) a cheeky sweet girl enters the household. Again, the realism and the comic timing are the movie?s strongest points. Very sweet movie!
NUMBER 3: Chandni
One of Yash Chopra?s best movies, this movie had its share of comedy, tragedy, romance and drama all put together and churned out! Sri Devi never looked prettier in any other movie! Like a typical Yash Chopra heroine, she wore white chudidaars and acted just perfectly! Paired with Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna, this was certainly a milestone in Sri Devi?s career.
The story about a simple small town girl who falls in love with a high-society kinda guy, and then due to unfortunate events how their love suffers. Like any other Yash Chopra film, the music of this film is pretty good too and of course, the neat locales of Switzerland completely rounds Chandni as a complete entertainer!
NUMBER 2: Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron
I?ve been watching this movie since I couldn?t even walk, and EVERY time I watch it, I simply cannot help gaping at how well made the movie is! A satire on Indian society, the movie is FULL of hilarious situations. With Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani in the lead roles, the movie clerverly addressed the issue of corruption and dishonesty in any field.
Who can forget the climax scene of this movie, where the characters take over a Mahabharat play going on stage, and in their disguise completely distort the story of the play! Hilarious scene! Directed by Kundan Shah, this movie starred some great theatre actors who genuinely acted so brilliantly that each character seemed true to life!
NUMBER 1: Mr. India
How could this movie be anywhere below the Number 1 spot! How can the Mogambo and Mr.India jodi not get its worth! This unforgettably splendid movie is every child?s favourite! Whether it was Anil Kapoor as a bechara Arun who became Mr.India, or it was the toli of cute little kids, or Sri Devi as a journalist who hates kids, or Annu Kapoor as the editor who received random phone calls, or it was Amrish Poori with the?Mogambo khush hua!? dialogue, or even Satish Kaushik as Calender who was the man-Friday in the kid?s household?these unforgettable characters completely round up a classic! After Gabbar Singh I think, Mogambo is the only?bad guy? that has still remembered for his uniqueness! Shekhar Kapoor gave a gem to the film industry, and a career to many of the people involved with this film! A MUST SEE!
These movies stand far far FAR apart from the stereotype of the 80s and that?s what makes them so great! So, if you can only remember the 80s as the pits of Bollywood, remember these few gems that were created in this time period. Forget Disco Jhatakna, and remember Mogambo Khush Hua!
