What is HR’s Next Big Move? OPPORTUNITY FOR HR

We have read about major organizations like Accenture, Adobe, and GE moving away from the annual employee review process. While these are major changes for organizations of their size and influence, all organizations can benefit from re-evaluating their performance management process to ensure it is aligned with their business goals. And perhaps with good reason.

Generally both management and employees approach the review process grudgingly with a view of a necessary evil….no wonder they aren’t very effective. This has created a demand for a different way of evaluating performance – in a recent Deloitte survey, 89% of respondents said they had changed their process or plan to do so in the next 18 months.

HR can play a major role to help define and create a new process. A new whitepaper from the Human Capital Institute(HCI) helps us to understand the key components to begin implementing agile performance management.

It is based on HCI research entitled “Conducting Dynamic Employee Appraisals” where barely half of all respondents believe annual performance reviews are accurate evaluations of their workforce’s production and capabilities.

Additionally, HCI has just launched a new two day certification course – Agile Performance Management(APM). The course provides a framework for a new process that includes setting goals; helping managers coach individuals; providing more continuous feedback, support and growth or change; and bringing more collaboration that is social and faster-moving.

This course will be the first of its kind to help you to focus on critical outcomes like feedback, coaching, goal setting, and manager and employee relationships. Designed for the new world of work, it shifts the focus from annual evaluation and rankings to continuous feedback and development. It is more collaborative, social and faster moving, which is what employees demand. The course is available online or in local markets across the US.

As you may know, I hold two of HCI’s certifications and I can personally vouch for the quality and utility of the certification courses.

Are there discussions in your organization about changing your employee appraisal process? What steps are you planning to take to be part of this shift?
