Lady.
for so many years I thought Id never find you
You have come into my life and made me whole
Forever let me wake to see you each and every morning
Let me hear you whisper softly in my ears
In my eyes I see no one else but you
Theres no other love like our love
And yes, oh yes, Ill always want you near me
Ive waited for you for so long
Lady, your loves the only love I need
And beside me is where I want you to be
cause, my love, theres something I want you to know
Youre the love of my life, youre my lady!
You dont hear much about him now, but when Kenny Rogers sang these lines on the radio one moonlit night in Goa, I fell in love. Soon, I was hooked. His songs had more substance and better arrangements than most other songs that I liked. The lyrics were uncomplicated, but his voice made my eyes well up. It still does.
Take, for example, Buy me a Rose. This is a song about the little things in life that we often forget.
He works hard to give her all he thinks she wants
A three car garage, her own credit cards
He pulls in late to wake her up with a kiss good night
If he could only read her mind, shed say:
"Buy me a rose, call me from work
Open a door for me, what would it hurt
Show me you love me by the look in your eyes
These are the little things I need the most in my life"
Though Im trying not to turn this into a review on Kenny Rogers, most of my favorite songs have been sung by him. My other favorites - well, heres a list.
*Things we do for love
Like walking in the rain and the snow when theres nowhere to go
When youre feeling like a part of you is dying
And youre looking for the answer in her eyes
You think youre gonna break up
Then she says she wants to make up.
. Agree to disagree but disagree to part
When after all its just a compromise
Of the things we do for love
*I Try
I try to say goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it its clear
My world crumbles when you are not near
*I say a little prayer for you
Aretha Franklin
The moment I wake up,
before I put on my make up
I say a little prayer for you
While combing my hair now,
and wondering what dress to wear now,
I say a little prayer for you
*You Dont Bring Me Flowers
- Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond
It used to be so natural
To talk about forever
Butused to bes dont count anymore
They just lay on the floor
Til we sweep them away
I cannot bring myself to bring this review to a close with mentioning The Best of me(Olivia Newton-John & Paul Cetera), Against all odds(Phil Collins), Behind Closed Doors - Charlie Rich, Sometimes when we touch(Rod Stewart) and Take a Bow(Madonna). Of course there are more, and you may not agree with my choice, or may not have heard some of them, but hey, wasnt it Keats who said -
Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter.
