Animated movies are made using a great variety of techniques and styles. from the classic animated cartoons of the 40s to the animation/live action mixes of the 80s and beyond, there is something for everyone. Here are some of our favorite picks.
Fantasia Disneys classic combination of classical music and animation. From the dancing hippos to magic brooms and pails to the haunting Night on Bald Mountain; Fantasia is a treasure.
Watership Down Film version of Richard Adams allegorical novel. Beautiful soft watercolor like backgrounds of the forests and hills. The film like the book has some violent scenes as the rabbits seek a safe place to live. This is not for the very young child but for elementary age children it can provide a way to discuss issues of society.
The Nightmare Before Christmas Tim Burtons strange tale of Jack Skellington of Halloweentown who finds out about Santa and Christmas and tries to bring Christmas to Halloween. This film is dark and quirky-definitely not for the under 6 crowd but great for older elementary school kids.
James and the Giant Peach based on Raold Dahls story-is animated by the same method.
The Lion King Disneys beautiful animation brings to life the African plain and animals. This was Disneys best in years.
The Land Before Time The original (before the multitude of sequels) is a sweet tale of caring and friendship. Join Littlefoot and Cera and friends as they try to reach the Great Valley and along the way learn the value of teamwork and friendship.
There are so many others- almost all the Disney Classics are worth watching. We also enjoyed An American Tale, all the Charlie Brown TV specials, The Prince of Egypt, and recently The Emperors New Groove
