Mohanlal has left an indelible mark not only in the sands if Indian Cinema but also in the minds of all film lovers especially all malayalees.His performances in evry film are so incredible that they come down from the white screen and reside in the hearts of the viewers forever.Here I write down my 5 favourite movies of the legend.(5 is a very small number).
5.Chekol(Dir:Sibi malayil)
While most people will be going aga over Kireedom, i feel that mohanlal lights up the silver screen with a riveting performance that is better than Kireedom!he brilliantly retains all the finer nuances of the charecter ’’Sethu’’ and performs the role to perfection.
4.Thoovanathumbikal(Dir:Padmarajan)
This movie would have been a total washout if the charecter of ’’jayakrishnan’’, played by mohanlal had fallen in some others hands.But mohanlal brings the screen alive with a subdued yet powerful performance in the dual role which gave a lift to the brilliant script of padmarajan.
3.Devasuram(Dir:IV Sasi)
mangalassery neelakantan was the charecter which introduced a new mohanlal to the cine goers.This filem was a trendsetter in the long list of moustach-twirling mohanlal films that were to follow, all featuring mohanlal.Backed by excellent music , brilliant screenplay and great supporting cast, mohanal brings alive the charecter on screen.
2.Iruvar(Dir:Mani Ratnam)
Mani ratnam is said to have confessed that he would never want to make a film with mohanal again, as he had great problem saying CUT many times during the shooting.Mohanlals charecter anandan is loosely based on a popular celebrity chief minister of tamil nadu.I just dont know how he missed out on the National award.
1.Vaanaprastham(Dir:Shaji.N.Karun)
Needless to say mohanlal is seriously the most gifted actor in India with this film going national.mohanlal plays Kunhikuttan , who is a top class kathakali artiste who has a tragic life.Even great katahkali aashanswere amazed by mohanlals ability to convy the right expressions as a kathakali artiste.watch the body language of lal as a kathakali performer and then as the common man, and u can say for sure that he is of the highest class.he won a national award for this film, but I feel all the above films including a dozen others should have fetched him national awards.
A special mention has to be made of another mohanlal movie No:20 Madras mail in which he is paired with mammotty.I dont think anyone in the world would have played the first half as convincilngly as mohanlal.he is near perfect..no he IS perfect!
