It was a breeze…
I know Iam supposed to start this review with a ” Gosh this was so difficult… more than 10000 reviews to choose from and just five to name. There are so many good writers and 100s of brilliant reviews. Narrowing them down to five is almost impossible”. But I wont do that because I took some very different guidelines to choose them.
First of all I have been a member in this site from just the 14th of February 2002; I have not read most reviews that have been written before my joining this site. Though I would like to state that, I have read 80% of reviews that have been written after I have joined this site. I have also rated them and commented where ever necessary. I have also read a small percentage of reviews that were written prior to me joining this site. So in the first place I did not have to choose from 10000 odd but just a few thousands odd.
After a drastic cut in the quantity I decided for a drastic cut in quality… surprised..? I decided not to include star writers in my list. A few reasons for this unreasonable decision, firstly star writers get enough publicity, their profiles float around the site almost continuously. Their reviews are hence all the more accessible to most members. Also most of star writers have themselves got a dozen of brilliant reviews to their credit. Choosing five from it will be unfair to other reviews written by the same author. Further the existing reviews under these columns have already mentioned most star reviewers and their works.
Then the next criteria I set was that they review should have given me something new, it should have conveyed something to me. It should have opened my eyes to some fact that I have not been aware of all my life.
Two serious reviews :
Life is not just laughter and jokes. Sometimes one needs to get a bit serious. These are two reviews that were pretty objective and ones that I would have loved to have penned.
5.Why write?? By ranjran Topic :Writing Reviews on MouthShut
https://mouthshut.com/readreview.php?rid=20824&r=1
A great review! by one of the most genuine members (according to me) on MS. This review is a must read for new members and old ones too. It was aptly timed and had some brilliant suggestions about edited reviews. I did differ with him on one of the suggestions though, read the comment section to know what that difference of opinion was about and why? Hope MS takes up some of those suggestions he has to offer. He said most things that I wanted to say more forcefully and forthrightly. This is one of the reviews I look up, to remind myself of what I should do to write a good review. Also read some of his reviews on Tech products, me for one is not a techie, so I picked this. He has a great one on motorola when the whole world was going Nokia!!!
4.For a refreshing bath! By : pooj Topic: Medimix Soap
https://mouthshut.com/readreview.php?rid=19866&r=1
Well what can you write about a bath soap. That too one that’s supposed to be so very drab like the Medimix. If that’s what you think then this is a review that you should read. It left me breathless the first time read it, firstly can any soap have so much of complexities; Okay this soap has, but can anyone go to this extent to study a bath soap in such detail. Oh my god this was a review that changed the way I looked at Soaps (the ones used in the bath I mean…. I still maintain the ones on TV are mere waste of time).
Laughter the best medicine:
A good review should have educated me and as an educator I realize that the best way to educate is to sugar coat what you have to say, and that’s where humor comes in. Attention span of people in today’s world is shrinking. To keep them interested you need to add some humor in your review. So the next standard was that the review needed to have some humor in it. Now many members out there consider that this is again a stupid criteria, when I m stupid wont my criteria be too. But then the logic behind it is the fact that I have enough of tensions in the real world. When I step in to MS, and read some really humorous reviews it adds to the fun at being in MS.
Now humor is all right (also strictly within context), but then I haven’t chosen these three reviews just because they are humorous….but because they have conveyed some message to me with humor as a medium.
3.Safe way to earn money... By s_imran80 Topic: Should Sport Personalities be Insured?
https://mouthshut.com/readreview.php?rid=19924&r=1
Wondering what I learnt from this review.. Well versatility. There are only two reviews written under this column the other one by missy32 is very serious one and straight to the point (a good review at that). But Imran’s review was outrageous. It just had me bursting into laughter. I would have never even thought of writing on this topic and I used to wonder what ever one will write under this topic. Amidst all the humor if one really looked, we could also find a veiled attack on the present anomalies that exist in the sporting world. Imran you are one of a kind. Keep up the good job.
2.I want to buy new shoes By ThumbInMouth Product reviewed: ICICI bank
https://mouthshut.com/readreview.php?rid=19509&r=1
This was his first review on the site and probably one of the best debut reviews on the site. Certainly the best debut review that I have read. It had a enigmatic title (buying shoes in ICICI Bank)… I thought probably this is one of those crazy members who posted a review at the wrong place. I could not have been more wrong, as I started reading the review; I was impressed by the flow of thoughts, the wit, the sarcasm and the intelligence of this writer. I did not agree with his opinion on the Bank he reviewed, you can see that in the comments section of this review. But then he changed my opinion that ICICI can never be wrong and made me realize, it’s not the brand alone but also the people who front the brand that makes the difference. Why the hell does he not write more often..??
1.A Personal Experience: Roosevelt or Barbara? By venugopalanv Topic: Choosing Gifts for a Wife
https://mouthshut.com/readreview.php?rid=19425&r=1
A gifted writer on MS, who is now on vacation in his hometown and hence not active in the past few weeks. This one in particular is laced with humor and wit in every other line. I would rate it as one of the best reviews that I have read on MS purely for the magical quality that venu brings to each sentence in this review. He comes out with a classic review that re-affirmed in me the faith that “women are unpredictable and that too in the most unpredictable of ways”. Don’t miss his review on Hyderabad too. Venu get back to the US soon, I really miss reading your reviews.
I should also mention in this place that, though I said that this was an easy task, I actually lied. I had to omit a few reviews which I had short listed. I think it will be unfair to the authors of those reviews, if I close this review without even a mention of them. They are
Sunil (eyesopen) all his reviews except “Boycott Pepsi” are worth a mantion.
Satya (satishkl) great musical reviews
Ashish (spookaay) brilliant reviews on Baawarchi.com and Mcafee antivirus software
Eric (frernas) comprehensive review on Branded Vs. Assembled Computers
Nandu (nandakumar) for at least a dozen well written reviews.
Maddy(madlalya)several good ones
