So many movies are produced these days that it is really difficult to choose five movies of your choice. It is difficult to choose, 5 in a year and here I am with 5 movies which had a social message….:-\ :-\
One thing that I have noticed that movies have always conveyed the message as per the need of the day. During 40s and 50s a lot of stress was laid on the development and empowerment of the weaker section of the society. In 1959 Bimal Roy’s SUJATA actually depicted the same. Sujata is the story of an untouchable girl (Nutun) and a Brahmin boy (Sunil Dutt). The movie stresses the point that if conducive environment is provided then untouchables can also reach at par with the Brahmins. I feel with so many Mandal and Kamandal this movies holds very true even today almost even after 50 years since it was released.
In 1972 or 73 came a movie which inspired movies like KHAMOSHI & BLACK, KOSHISH! Not sure, whether this was Gulzar Sahab’s first movie as the director but this landmark movie is about a ups and downs of a deaf and dumb couple. In fact at times one may feel that scenes in Khamoshi are modified version of scenes from KOSHISH. Jaya Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar were the ideal choice for this movie.
1983, Mahesh Batt’s ARTH touched the forbidden subject of infidelity and broken homes. The movie also underlines the message of women empowerment. The entire cast was perfect but my personal choice is Rohni Hatangri. The small character of the maid servant portrayed by her was really very good.
In the current decade, one will find NRIs returning to India and developing the under developed areas, bringing in technology and educating rural India. That is what is the story of SWADES. SRK also proved that he can act
Politics is not just a topic of drawing room discussion it is the way to change the system. YUVA and RANG DE BASANTI actually proved that. Although, depicted in different manner, the message was, if one wants change he has work for it and not just sit back and crib about it. It is most difficult for me to choose one between the two, but as I have only one left I feel YUVA was better. The movie has shown the importance of democracy and expressed faith in that. Movie narrates the story of the young man, Ajay Devgan, who choose to change the system by becoming a politician (read MLA) himself. I found it very inspiring and appealing.
