Folks , here is my list of those 5 films that deserved to be appreciated but didn’t . I have also put forward the reasons why I think these films didn’t do well at the box office. I would love to hear your comments in this regard. And yes, my thanks to all those who read , commented and recommended my other reviews.
Some good movies might be missing in this list especially Saagar , Shakti and a few more..maybe next time...
1) 1942 A Love Story
A modern day classic, which unfortunately made more waves for its great music than for Vidhu Vinod Chopras direction. The film had everything going for it - great script , great direction , superb performances and of course great music. But the great Indian masses failed to see the hard work put in by Vinod Chopra and his crew !! One of the reasons why this film failed was because hum aapke hain koun was released at around the same time and the masses preferred to see Madhuri Dixit and company sing marriage numbers than a period drama !!What a shame !!!
2) Khamoshi-The musical
The debut movie of Sanjay Bhansali showed the world that here is a director to watch out for in the future. It was a well-directed movie with good music and some good performances by the lead cast. The film failed because of its script- most people found the film boring. Well, at least Sanjay Bhansali had the guts to go ahead and make a film that he believed in, never mind if people didn’t share his thoughts.
3). Saza -e- Kalapani
An absolutely stunning film by Priyadarshan ! Great script , great direction , great cinematography, great set designing , good performances from the entire cast and some decent music. I think the film failed because of the star cast .Mohanlan might be a superstar down south but in the rest of the country he is not known as a star let alone a superstar. Which is really a tragedy because he gave a splendid performance and the movie deserved to be a box office success .
4) Lamhe
A great piece of cinema from the man himself-Yash Chopra. The film boasted of an unusual script , good performances , great production standards , good performances from the ever reliable Anil Kapoor and Sridevi and some soulful music from Shiv-Hari.The film I guess failed because of two reasons-The unusual script and the sophisticated look of the film which the Indian masses found too good to handle !!
5) The Legend Of Bhagat Singh
A really nice film, which unfortunately didn’t click at the box office. This Raj Kumar Santoshi directed film saw Ajay Devgan gave one of his finest performances till date. The rest of the cast also did a good job. The film had good screenplay and some good music by the maestro A.R Rahman. All in all a well-directed film by Santoshi.Everybody who saw the film liked it, so why did it flop? The only plausible reason could be the overdose of Bhagat Singh films –as many as 5- released within the same period of time. Nevertheless people should have seen this film not just because it is a nice film but also to know about Bhagat Singh and his sacrifices .
