Well there has been history of good films flopping at box office not only in bollywood but also in hollywood.The list of such films is pretty long.Therefore I would like to comment only on the movies released after 1990. First in the list is.
PRAHAAR-
A sensitive action movies based on the life of commando trainer(Nana Patekar), who comes to mumbai to attend his trainee’s(Peter)wedding, but he was shocked to find that peter is murdered by some street goondas.the commando who put his life in danger to protect civilians is killed by some local goondas. This changes Nana’s life and he decides to live in mumbai to fight it out. He killed all those involved but lost it.The movies describe how the tough army man couldnt cope up with the anarchy and street crimes of mumbai. Nana is mindblowing in one of his few realistic acting performances.Dimple Kapadia, and Madhuri Dixit are superb in support performance.
This is one of the few realistic action movies .may be that proved to be its nemisis
ASOKA.
This movie is a visual delight by Santosh Sivan.A story of love, and conquest of emperor Asoka. It unfolds the the events in the life of Asoka.His journey from chandasoka to dhammasoka.His romance with Kaurwaki and his marriage with a buddhist girl.The Kalinga war in the end is picturised beautifully where Asoka has to fight with Kaurwaki.the death scene of little prince brings tears into eyes. SRK is brilliant in the movie.the music by anu malik is brilliant .
.may be peoples were expecting history lessons in the movie.
LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH.
A gem of a movie by Raj Kumar Santoshi, unfortunately got itself in the middle of 3 more Bhagat Singh movies one of which featured deol brothers. The greatness of the movie lies in the way director controlled the main historical characters, they were not jingoistic at all, they were not killing 10 britishers single handedly, as Sunny Deol did in other bhagat sing movie.may be people didnt like this.
ZAKHM.
The last movie directed by Mahesh Bhat.the movie is about a hindu child of an unmarried muslim mother of which he was unaware of.When the truth came out she took promise from her son to bury her according to muslim traditions.and not to tell her unborn child that his mother is muslim. The mother is on her death bed and backdrop is Mumbai riots and a son fulfills his promise.The movie is straight from the heart .The performance by Ajay Devgan is brilliant, which earned him his first National awards .I personally liked the performance by(ajay devgan’s childhood) the child artist more.Pooja Bhat as mother is excellent.one of her better movies .the music by M M Kreem is melodious and lyrics are meaningful.
All in all a meaningful movie.may be people dont like sensible movies
SWADES.
Well this is the latest movie which I saw.one of the best I ve ever seen.Ashutosh Gowarikar second artistic success after lagaan.The movie is about a NASA scientist Mohan bhargava who wants to visit his country to meet his dai maa .Mohan’s simple quest becomes the journey that every one of us go through in search of that elusive place called’home’. The movie is an experiment with grassroots realism. It showed poverty, caste system, illiteracy, child labour, lack of electricity and number of other ills that can plague India . The performance by SRK is till date his best.his ability to emote is just extraordinary.support cast is also superb.
In the movie mohan lighted a bulb by producing electricity.
In the movie theatre some people were laughing how a man could produce an electricity.they were actually ignorant that such thing has been done in kerala.may be’we the people’ of india wants to remain ignorant of our problems and .may be thats why this movie is commercially flop.
The list for(1995- 2004)is too long to count.may be this list can become smaller in next decades to come.
