The Holidays are here!!! For me it means hours(days) of lazing around and not having to move even a finger for anything and also watching tonnes and tonnes of movies and reading heaps and heaps of books!!!
Last year, my Christmas was full of musicals since I was in London and was on a frenzy to watch as many musicals as I can in 2 weeks(I managed to watch 6)This christmas ...well rather pre-christmas, somehow for some reason there is more excitement around, more shopping, more carols and more christmas theme commercials on TV than the past 2 yrs.
At first it was an overkill....almost to the point of gagging. But I guess once you drown, you become a waterbody and breath water like everything else around you(Or something to that effect). So heres a list of movies that I would love to watch this Chirstmas, like I have been doing since a child.
5. Home Alone -
This movie may not be entirely about Christmas, but it does capture the true spirit of the holidays - Of being with your family. A hugely successful movie about a 9 yr old boy who is forgotten at home by his family and his survival tricks and plans to ward off burglary attempts by 2 clumsy thieves. Although at first Kevin has fun, he realises towards the end that he misses his family a lot and is really bored without them. Quite funny and entertaining.
4. Miracle on 34th street -
There are two versions of this movie....one that was released in 1940s and the other in 1990s. They are both the same. A little girl in New York does not believe in Christmas or Santa Claus and her neighbor, Mr.Krinkles makes her believe otherwise. The movie tries to show what a cynical and hopeless world we live in and is a move to make the children feel that there is still hope if one believes.
3. Dr. Suesss the Grinch who stole christmas -
Dr. Suess childrens books are very very popular and truly imaginative. His creativity is evident in this classic work. The story is set in Whoville where the whos live. Up on top of an isolated mountain lives the Grinch who hates christmas and is hated by everyone in the Whoville. A little girl Cindy Lou Who is intrigued by the Grinch and tries to find the real reason behind Grinchs hate for Christmas. Meanwhile the Grinch plans to steal christmas from the whos. Will Cindy be able to stop the Grinch and will the Grinch stop hating christmas is what forms the rest of the story. The movie is as good as the book. This is one role in which I absolutely adored Jim Carrey.
2. Charlie Browns christmas story -
Charlie Brown and the rest of the peanut gang are one of the best childrens stories and comics for ages. This story is as popular as Charlie Browns Halloween. Charlie Brown is all excited about Christmas and decides to direct a school Christmas play in which the rest of the gang are playing parts. He picks out a thin scraggly christmas tree and is made fun of by everyone. The whole gang believes Christmas is just gifts and being nice to others. Charlie Brown with Linus show the gang the true spirit of christmas.
1. A christmas story -
Christmas or no christmas, this movie is so hilarious, it is a must watch. This is so amusing that it had me in splits. The movie captures the thought process of 9 yr old Ralphie Parker. He tries several ways to convince his parents to get him a BB gun for christmas. But all the adults including the store Santa believe Ralphie will shoot hsi eye out.
The dialogue in the movie is mostly the thoughts of Ralphie....about how he tries to manipulate his mother into trying to buy him a BB gun...about silly school dares and getting into trouble....about trying to avoid being bullied, about being caught using the F word in front of his parents...about day dreaming how his parents would repent when he would turn blind as a result of punishing him(He had to hold soap in his mouth for using the filthy word!!!)The stupid Ovaltine secret club in its coded messages.
This movie is definitely No.1 and will be a part of my movie collection for years. Watch it if you can get hold of it. Its really funny.
So there you go, theres enough to keep you occupied through the holidays and if you have any more time to spare, use it to stuff your mouth with all the christmas goodies!! Happy Holidays :)
