About the Discovery. I believe most of the MSers are of age ranging between 20-30.So theres really a gr8 chance that most of us have missed reading this book. I am, rather, I was actually a little dumb with some preconcieved notion that most of the Indian authors are no good. I have never even tried to grab a book by some Indian author and give a try. Out of all the books I read there are very less books by the Indian authors. I have read the works by the authors like Kushwant Singh, Shoba de, Salman Rushdie, Arundhati roy, Vikram Seth etc.. But that was after they have become famous for some award or a contaversy. But just a few days before I was just checking out some seconds book shop.Thats where I have found this book by Amrita Preetam.(Note:It was a translation from Punjabi to English) About the Book This book was first published in 1973 and its so fresh and is still very relevent. The book is about the University life of a set of students, their ambitions , dreams and how this society (the traditions, values, culture, sentiments, families) has affected their dreams and their lives.
The book is sattarical and with lots of fun .Fun in the sense that its funny but theres lot in it that invokes your thoght process. Theres this scene where a (frustrated) artist arranges a exhibition of his works but the viewrs are shocked to find a dead animals hanged with captions like the portrait of a cat under the Cats body and so on.And when some body asks when his portarit will be up for the exhibition, he says that would be the last piece of his art.And then when this guy is put into an asylum he will be always standing , as if displaying his own portarit. Theres this guy who knows that his father is having an illicit relation with another woman. And when his father dies the other woman also commits suicde and this guy wonders. Which was an illicit relation?.The Relationship between his father and mother or the other relationship. Final conclusion It is a small and simple book. Please do read this and suggest more Indian authors to MSers. And I feel proud (once again that this my second first review. The first one being the guide) PS:this is not some swadeshi campaign.Just that , their roots in India might show us something more realistic things.
