Whose race is it anyway? Technology or us...

Being a computer engineer by profession and having been in the tech sector for over 8 years, this is the question that has raised on my mind all the time. Are we in RACE FOR TECHNOLOGY. The answer is not simple as the question.

I started using computer when I was 13 years old. The inception of computers was a little late in India, though it picked-up pace and is in par with today’s world. The first computer I saw at that time was an 8086 based system with no hard disk and used to work with a floppy. This is just about a decade back. Only thing I could do with that system was write some small documents play small games and perform some small processing and printing tasks. Well of course, I m talking in terms and perspective of a common man. Slowly, but not steadily technology emerged and started to put on pace faster and faster. A 640KB floppy was considered a great disk space to have and a computer was pride for people who owned it. It’s like having a Rolls Royce at home. Not everyone could afford it and even if they did not many had the knowledge how to use them.

When I was in college doing my bachelors degree, I was amazed to see Microsoft coming up with Windows technology. Things changed thereafter. Common man had an opportunity to use and learn this technology. Earlier, it was UNIX and other hard to use operating systems, though still considered one of the best as of today. At that time our college had a server with 540 MB of memory considered as great to use systems.

Today it’s not even a decade past, but the revolution has changed everything. Disk space is abundant. Processor speed in enormous. Every month I see the speed going up by about 0.5 Gigs. Six months back 1.0 GB processor speed was great system. In a few months the chip manufacturers will discontinue that technology.

Is this good or bad...

Yes, I think the growth in technology is a very good sign and has positive effects on economy and make things better for us to live. But lets look at the negative aspects. One of the fastest depreciation is in technology sector. I mean in terms of the products and services you buy. Its not like gold or stocks or bonds that has prospects of future growth. A computer or for that matter most technological equipment are worth less than half the price in a few months from now.

Here is a good example, My friend bought a Dell Desktop for $1350. The very next week, the same dell system was worth only $750. Another example from my personal experience, I bought a dell system last Friday online from dell. I paid approximately $1750. Just as the weekend passed by the price has dropped by $175.

Is the price dropping due to the economical conditions. Well, not really. It has always been like that. Newer technology replaces the older one, is priced lesser and the price changes as fast as the technology does.

My question here is ’’CAN WE STOP IT FROM HAPPENING’’, I think the answer is NO. It has to go on. What we could do instead is to make use of computer and Internet effectively. It’s the cheapest way of communication today. Almost everything is possible. Mails in the forms of e-mail, fax, information (THE KEY TO SUCCESS ON THIS PLANET), Banking, Trading. Imagine how hard it would be to go to a bank often to check your account, update your bank record books and how much more difficult could it be to buy and sell stocks, bonds in the market. All is available just clicks away. HAIL TECHNOLOGY.

In fact, I would be more worried if technology did not get outdated. That means there is lesser demand and people do not want newer technology.

Finally, Let me conclude by saying

We make TECHNOLOGY.

We move the world.

It’s technology that drives our lives

Those clearer Vision

For better hopes, and greater heights.
