Creating Games Using GameMaker

The Big Picture

Playing computer games is ofcourse fun, but designing your own computer games for other people to play is something else! But let’s face it, creating computer games is not an easy task. It takes in a lot of knowledge of programming, designing(that includes the basic game structure and the art work involved), and ofcourse, most of all, hard work with full dedication. Commercial computer games these days can take one to three years of development with teams of anywhere between 10 and 50 people, who all need to be either highly experienced programmers, art designers, sound technicians, etc. The budget naturally reaches millions of dollars.

What You Need

Well now you may wonder if I’m writing this article to encourage you in game development or the complete opposite! Fear not, for with the advent of gaming technology, helpful softwares have also laterally emerged that make sure everyone gets a chance to boost their creativity in this field. Softwares that make game development actually an EASY task! Now ofcourse, I’m not talking about creating your own Quake or Counter Strike, but yes, you can start off with much simpler games like Pacman, Tetris, etc. and then move onto tougher projects after gaining the experience. Now unfortunately, if you are not familiar with basic programming, then most of these softwares also tend to be useless. But then again, fear not, for here in this article, I present to you, that game making software that doesnt require programming. I mean that is the main objective of these softwares, to save on time and effort, which mainly is possible if there is minimal programming codes to write for the user. GAME MAKER has it all.

GAME MAKER

Developed by Mark H. Overmars, Game Maker has been written to make it a lot easier to create computer games without the need to program. You can import and create images, sprites(animated images), sounds and use them effectively in your game, using a very clear and intuitive drag-and-drop interface. But if you do want full control over your game, then you can still use the easy-to-use built-in Game Maker programming language.

Game Maker primarily focuses on two-dimensional games. So no Quakes! But don’t let that put you down. Many great games, like Age of Empires, Diablo, etc. use 2D technology, and yet they manage to give you the 3D feel! And ofcourse, developing 2D games is a lot easier and the proper way to start your game development spree!

Quite obviously, one of the best part is that Game Maker is available free of charge, and you can you can do whatever you want to of the games that you create. You can try make money out of your game by selling it, and also there are no in-game nagging screens.

You can check out its website, https://gamemaker.nl. This is where you can get your copy of Game Maker, and also where you can download the fun games other Game Maker users have created.

You too can submit your creations.

What You Need To Give

Creating games with the Game Maker is great fun, but it does require an in-depth understanding of the software. There are many important aspects like game play, sounds, user interaction, graphics, etc. But after a little hard work and some dedication, you will realise how simple Game Maker really is!. and yet feel the usefulness of this small but incredibly powerful software!

What You Need To Take

Just take your time with it, and it won’t let you down!
