So you have a computer. Now there are a lot of things that should and should not be done to keep the computer in good working order.
You have to keep everything clean. Getting dust and dirt in it does not keep it running smoothly.Clean your computer every day. Treat it as if you would treat a child so it doesnt get ill. Make sure you keep the circulating fan free of dust by wiping it off with a dry cloth or simply using a tiny vacuum. Now and then it is a good idea to take the cover off and dust the entire inside being careful to not knock anything out of place.
You should make sure that your computer has plenty of breathing space but leaving the case out far enough on your desk to let the air circulate. In the hot humid weather I keep the computer room as cool as possible and keep a fan on the other side of the room to blow on the computer so it doesnt over heat. Do not put the fan right near the computer or plugged into the same outlet.
Try to refrain from smoking near the computer and drinking things that could spill into the keyboard and stop it from working.
There are cleaning units you can use to clean the cd rom drive and the floppy drive. Use them as directed on the package.
Never spray anything directly on to your monitor. Put the cleaner on a cloth and apply it this way.
To keep dust and dirt out of your keyboard get a can of liquid air which will blow everything out.
Do not have anything metal sitting near your computer. No magnets, fans, lights or paper clips. These can cause a problem.
Remember to clean out your temporary files, your cache and any other un-needed files daily.
Make sure you have a good virus scanner and use it on a regular basis. You should also scan disk and defrag on a regular basis.
Be good to your computer and it will last you a long time. Mine on an average lasts about 4 years.
When removing a program always use the un-install feature rather than just delete it as that leaves some of the program still there.
I know on one program there was no un-install and I deleted it and the program still runs. So when thinking of installing a program put the cd in, go to your explorer and read off what is on there before installing. If there is no un-install feature you take the risk of messing things up if you ever want to get rid of it.
I recommend never installing more than one program at a time and running it awhile before installing another. This way should you have a conflict occur you will know which program is causing it and can then easily remove it.
Computers are expensive, lets face it so get the most for your money by taking a few minutes to maintain it in proper working order. If you should run into a problem that you do not know how to correct then do not attempt it yourself. Get some one that knows what they are doing. One wrong mistake made can ruin your computer.
Also any computer can crash so be sure to back up your files on a regular basis.
