Western digital - worst support - do not buy

I recently purchased a Western Digital 1 TB external hard disk. The disk was fine for a month before it conked out and wouldn’t start up.

I contacted their support and was told that I would need to send it in for a replacement. I had already loaded a lot of data onto the drive and erased it from my computer. So I asked if I could get the data retrieved from the drive. Their support said, no, they can’t provide that service and that I would need to contact some external vendor for data recovery. The western digital site however states that if the casing for the disk is opened, the warranty would be invalid and a replacement will not be provided. So to be on the safer side, I decided to not retrieve the data and send it in for a replacement.

Western digital provided pick up and drop off service. That was the good part. Now more problems. The western digital site states that the drive needs to be sent in with the accessories(USB connector and power cable). When I received the replacement drive after 2 weeks, I received only the drive. The accessories are missing - btw these are accesories without which the drive is fairly useless.

I called up their support agents in Delhi(011 2638 4700) and they said the replacement for the accessories would be sent in 48 hours. After waiting for a week(without any response), I wrote to them and didn’t get any responses. Waited another week(with no response to the emails) and called them up again and here is the response I get:

"There is a shortage of accessories and you may or may not receive them"

Recommendation: Pls. stay away from Western Digital hard disks at all costs. Their support is probably the worst I have had to deal with.
