I had visited Genting Highlands in May 2006 as a part of my south east asian tour.
Location: Genting Highlands is about 50 kms from Kula Lumpur the capital of Malaysia, it is a hill station situated at an height of approx 6000 ft.
Climate: Since it is at a height the climate is relatively cool as compared to the cities, the temperature we experienced was 12-15 degrees. The region being close to the equator gets rainfall nearly everyday.
Getting here: We took a bus from KL, the time taken to reach Genting Highlands was about 90 mins, on our return journey to KL we took the cable car which they claim is the worlds longest and highest, I am not too convinced that this is the highest cable car ride in the world, I feel there are much higher hill stations with this facility. The ride is long close to 1 hr.
Accommodation: The place has a wide choice of hotels to suit all budgets, from 5 star hotels like hotel genting, to a more basic hotel like the first world hotel which is the worlds biggest hotel in terms of number of rooms offered, this hotel has 19 check in recieption counters. We stayed at Hotel Genting, it had good rooms and facilities like any other 5 star hotel.
Food: One has a wide variety of restraints to choose from, and has a great opportunity to sample food from all over the world, which is what I did. If you are a pure veg or jain you have limited choice anywhere outside India and Genting is no different.
Outdoor theme park: I was looking forward to this attraction, the papers advertise a lot about the outdoor theme park, one gets an impression that this the Disney of the east, but in reality it is much smaller than essel world or wonder la, very very few rides and when it rains they close the park, one ride the standing coaster has an additional charge of RM 10 which is not worth it. Was disappointed big time over here.
Indoor theme park: there is a small indoor theme park also, a ripleys haunted adventure, a few coin operated games, a sky diving simulator which was closed due to the bad weather and overcast conditions. In short the indoor theme park is not that great. Snow world: There is a small snow world too in genting, but the sad part is that they do not allow you to remove photos inside, nothing great in the snow park.
Shows and casinos: The hotel every night has some magic shows like the ones at vegas which was quite good. No adult shows as Malaysia is a very conservative society. There is a casino too at the Genting but I prefer the ones in Macau, this Casino was small and felt cramped. The lighting was too dim.
Technology: The entire place is interconnected with escalators so it is not difficult to move around and not tiring. Each place/hotel has a colour code and one needs to follow escalators leading in that direction. The best thing in gentling I would say. Also they claim tap water in the rooms is fit for drinking, the guide said it was true In short this place is ok to see once in a lifetime, but the promotions only hype this place not worth the hype.
