Jacksonville, US, summer of 1964 saw the formation of this band, calling themselves My Backyard, maybe because thats where they practised. In december they had their first live performance and earned $10 for the same.
They became Noble Five, wildcats, sons of satan, one percent, pretty ones, conqueror worm and then it was the legendry LS. Why LS???
During this school years, there was a gym instructor called Leonard Skinner, who had strict rules of dressing, no long hair, long side burns. But the group possessed all this and so, one of them was eventually thrown out. During one of their gigs, they stated for a name change, and the crowd went chanting Leonard Skinner and soon before they knew it, they called themselves Lynard Skynard.
G&P is a compilation of LS with songs such as Sweet Home Alabama, 3 steps a minute, the smell, tuesday’s gone and last but not the least Freebird, a tribute to Allman Brothers esp Duane Allman.
Influenced by southern rock, LS has a different tune to their music, a fast rockish beat, with southern styles . Incidentally this was their first album after the fateful aircrash in 1977 when Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and road manager Dean Kilpatrick are killed
