Everything Golmaal In Golmaal !!!

With this review I venture in the realms of movies, this is my first review on a movie, I hope it is not last ;-)

Humans have a variety of traits, lying is one of them. Many people make use of this trait when needed, some are habitual liars.  A lie is told to deceive someone, deception is the aim. It is often told to extricate oneself from some difficult situation, to prevent occurrence of problematic situation, to protect one’s reputation or to avoid some kind of punishment. Little does the person who tells a lie, know that to hide a single lie, he has to weave a web of lies. Suspicions and lies are the ingredients which are sure to spoil the recipe of a marriage.

Here is the story of such a person, who, to avoid the suspicions of his wife has to tell lies. Ajay Devgan plays the role of Gopal whose wife Ekta(Kareena Kapoor) is addicted to the famous/infamous Saas-bahu serials. Gopal’s sister Esha(Amrita Arora) and his wife’s brother, Lucky(Tushar Kapoor) also stay with them. Once on his way back from his office , he happens to save Meera(Celina Jaitley) from some goons, due to their damaged vehicles and unavailibilty of any other conveyance, they have to stay back on the yatch.

He returns home the next day, to only arouse the suspicions of his wife, who thinks that he keeps flirting with girls. In order to alley her suspicions, he fabricates a story about spending the night with a friend by name of Anthony Gonsalves( I always wonder, Why this name crops up in so many movies? ).  Ekta has difficulty digesting his story, so she writes to Anthony to visit her.

Meanwhile Laxman(Shreyas Talpade), is desperately looking for a job. His marriage to his sweetheart Meera depends upon his job prospects. Laxman comes for the interview at Golden fisheries, where Gopal is responsible for new recruitments. He is adapt at playing various roles, so Gopal puts a precondition to his getting a job. Gopal asks him to act as his friend, Laxman readily agrees to act as his friend Anthony and appear in front of his wife. Everything goes on as planned until the address where Ekta had sent a letter turns out to be real.

Another hitch occurs when a corpse is found. The Officer, who is in charge of the case is none other than Madhav(Arshad Warsi), who plays the love interest of Esha. Madhav and Gopal happen to have a mutual strong dislike for each other. He discovers that on the night of the murder, Gopal was not only missing from home but the dead man too worked in his office. To put salt on Gopal’s wounds, the dead man happens to be the one for whom Gopal’s hatredness is known to all. As Madhav’s investigations proceeds, the web of lies becomes more intricately woven and as it always happens, to conceal one lie, more have to be told.

What happens then? What happens when you weave a web of deceit and lies? Will Gopal free himself from this web and prove himself innocent? To know this you better watch the movie.

I have seen Golmaal, umpteen times, it was natural for me to compare both the original and the sequel. It made me wonder whether it will be atleast as good as the prequel or surpass it. People might have lots of expectations and they may or maynot be fulfilled. I was disappointed a little, I enjoyed the prequel very much. You would like this movie only if you refrain from comparing it with its prequel.

The added attractions are Celina Jaitley, Amrita Arora , Anjana Sukhani(as Daisy), Shreyas Talpade, I did miss Sharman Joshi though initially but Shreyas is better. Anjana is shown as deaf and her love interest as mute, what a pair !!

The punches used are powerless to make you laugh. I didn’t find the gags and digs on various people and movies in good taste and they were not needed at all. Some scenes, where they get hurt in unmentionable places were not necessary at all. All four were shown dressed up as women, only Shreyas could carry off nicely. Arshad dressed up in Rani’s get up from the movie Black, Tushar in a red dress looked as if he was a waitress in a Chinese restaurant, Ajay looked like an African, they all failed to make an impact as women.

Ashwini Kalsekar’s role was small but likeable with her added “S”. Mukesh Tiwari as Vasuli and Rakhi Vijan as Julie were fully wasted, they had nothing todo. Murli Sharma as the MD was good but he is wasted in movies like this. Sanjay Mishra as Subodh was perfect. Celina was good, switching between Hindi and Tamil which she spoke with quite ease. Amrita was also okay as far as her role was concerned. Anjana had very little to do. Kareena sure surpassed everyone with her acting prowess, she is brilliant esp in the scene where she thinks that Ajay was dead and in true serial addict fashion shows her histronics. Tushar is best in the role of a mute. Ajay is convincing most of the time. Arshad’s role could have been a little serious with respect to his profession in the movie.

The first version is still fresh in minds of the viewers as it is regularly shown on one or the other channel. The sequel is produced on a grander scale and shot in various locations. Gopal is shown having Ekta engraved as a tattoo on his wrist but in actual it was a sticker. Arshad also sports Saif tattooed on his chest. Most of the characters are same but their characterization is different. I would prefer not to call it a sequel.

The opening scene is good and the title song is impressive. The title song is sure to be a hit. The script is not very strong, a little tighter script would have worked better. The choreography was also so-so, Tha karke was picturised elaborately but the bullet noise reminded me of firecrackers being bursted. The songs are hummable but will not be remembered for long.

On the whole, it is enjoyable if you don’t bother about any logic and you are a game for some time pass comedy. You laugh a lot less than the original but nevertheless it is passable. All’s well that ends well.
