It is amazing how the complexities of the character, the nature of the society in war times, the hardships of war all have been brought together and knitted into this wonderful piece of literature. The best part of the book is, that the writer gives us a protagonist, Scarlett O Hara, who is fearless, clever businesswoman, stands on her own and teaches us without wanting to, what feminism really stands for. All of this at a time, where the women of west were restricted to their homes and expected to be pretty little dumb.
Our hero, Rhett Butler, is someone I personally fell in love with. Mostly because, he is not our typical knight in shining armor, but an immodest, terribly blunt, sharp minded, a little deceitful but a truly captivating character. He hardly gives a damn to the society and for anyone else but there way more to him than meets the eye. This is gradually unfolded in the book which truly makes you sympathize with him. There love story sweeps you away because it is unusual and different.
The other characters add more drama and layers to the story, with each character having a certain depth in them.To anyone who is fond of reading and especially if its romance, this book is a must read. and you will definitely find yourself thinking about it even after you have long read it [ I did so for at least three days].
