A true classic,literally & otherwise

Gone with the wind...a name every one has heard, whether young or old, a classic book and an ever green movie. The plot in the classic book is set in the 1860’s, way too old for the people of this generation, a time when none of us existed. It is a tale of a willful, defiant and ambitious girl Scarlett O’Hara who fights every obstacle life presents her and her fiery and passionate love for the much hated, unscruplous Rhett Butler. The story runs in the backdrop of the war between the South of America and the ’Yankees’ of the 19th century, a time when slavery of the blacks was very much a part of the life of the Americans. The plot of the book is brilliantly woven, highly engrossing and somewhat shocking, the way the lifestyle of people at that time is depicted. It tells the tale of Scarlett’s life, how she is transformed from the carefree beautiful belle of the County before war to a struggling, fighting woman trying desparately to make ends meet when she has to support her family and slaves.During her struggle comes along her way the man she hates with all her heart, how she is at his mercy at every step in life. The characters are all portrayed brilliantly.

The Scarlett before war is lovable, gentle and lady-like, and the war transforms her into a money minded, sometimes mean and rebellious woman. This change is beautifully conveyed by Margaret Mitchell the author of this bestseller. The war situations are as true to life as can be, making one’s heart wrench with pain. Its difficult to stop reading as the book is highly engrossing.Even though there isn’t the usual element of suspense or horror or thrills in the book, the tale of the County folks is entertaining. The characters of Melanie, the weak-appearing but stell-strong sister-in-law of Scarlett, Mammy, the negro slave and guardian of Scarlett are so endearing, the reader will immediately bond with these fictitious but larger than life people. The language used is of course old english, which has a different old-world charm to it, a language no longer found. And the language of the ’darkies’ as they are referred to in the book is just perfect, for example ’’Whut’ll happen ter Maw?Oh Gawd, , whu’ll happen ter us effen de Yankees gets hyah?’’ Certainly, reading such language tends to be a little difficult sometimes, but nevertheless, is very life-like. I had obtained the book from a library with the pages barely in a managable condition, spent about two weeks in reading the book, but I can undoubtedly say its a time well invested. For, this book is the type that takes the reader into a totally different world, an enchanting one.So if you want to submerge into a vast world of emotion, drama, love, war, courage, go ahead, get yourself a copy of Gone With The Wind.
