I have in my possession the autobiography of Anthony Qinn titled ‘Original Sin, The’ who is one of the leading guys in the movie. The book is simply superb so I quite took a liking to the actor. One fine day I was just flipping channels as I caught this movie on AXN. I saw the movie because of Tony Quinn who was one of the finest actors in Hollywood.
This is a sort of a drama movie with gripping performances from each of the actors. Guess what it also starred Gregory Peck. The British troops are stuck at Normandy and have to be evicted. But that is not possible because at Navarone there is a narrow pass at which German guns are placed in an inaccessible terrain. These guns can destroy ships far in the sea. Six soldiers from the allied forces are sent to destroy them. How they move about, what difficulties they overcome in succeeding is what forms the crux of the film. The movie moves at a good pace. The acting by the cast has to be seen to be believed. Realism is the word. A little melodramatic maybe at times, without which the movie would be bland. My favorite scene is the one in which it is revealed that one of the party is actually a German spy and she has to be killed by Gregory Peck who loved her. Time to remove your hankies. The overall effect of the movie is scintillating. It leaves you with a same feeling as watching Sholay would have had on you. Only’s there no comedy and no Basanti in this film.
