A bluer shade of horror

Forget everything you know about Stephen King. This book, the first in a series, is a classic fantasy romp of discovery, wonder, and adventure. The plot is fresh, and the story progression leaves the reader with a quiet curiosity because Roland, the title protagonist, is a quiet loner who reveals himself and his quest in small ways, gradually. Get lost in the moment as he tracks the Man in Black on foot through a devastated landscape.

King’s literary skills have improved greatly over the years. When The Gunslinger was first released, I was 12 or 13 years old. This book spellbound me. As effective as he is at drawing out pure terror, anxiety, and disgust in his readers, this book shows that he can summon pure wonder with the same magnetism that keeps readers wondering why they can’t put his books down.
