What is Depression?

Depression affects more than 17 million Americans of all ages and races. Depression is a brain disorder that affects your thoughts, moods, feelings, behavior and physical health. People used to think it was ’’all in your head’’ and that if you really tried, you could ’’pull yourself out of it.’’ Doctors now know that depression is not a weakness, and you can’t treat it on your own. It’s a medical disorder with a biological basis.  Medications are available that are generally safe and effective, even for the most severe depression. With proper treatment, most people with serious depression improve, often within weeks, and can return to normal daily activities. I have had to deal with depression all my life.

I came from a broken home and lived in foster homes all my life. There are medications, therapy, counseling, day camp, social activities and so much more.  I am very involved in the group and other people in the group have really shown me comfort as well in return for me to them.  I consider the people at the center as my family where we help one another in any way we can.  Even my husband and kids get involved just for the fun of it.  Without the help, I would be totally lost today. I am very thankful for the organization and their help.  If you or a loved one is suffering from depression, my recommendation is to check out a clinic near you and get involved to get the help you need and participate in the activities.  It will do a lot of good and you will feel like a brand new person in time.  Thank you for reading. :-)
