Smoky Eyes - Surma from Hashmi

Behold! Beauty in eyes!A few years back, in Delhi, we were dropping a beautiful young artist back to her home. Admiring her beautiful eyes I asked what she uses. She told me she gets her surma from Pakistan and it is sold in Delhi somewhere. Previously she had told me about two types of surma-one for the aged and one for younger people. Older people require a cooling surma as the eyes become dry.

Let there be peace!I will add here that I firmly believe that we shall have peace in the region and that we should appreciate our neighbouring countries so that we can soon be like the European union and wield economic power and such together.

A golden gift I was really surprised and touched when she sent me a bottle of surma. It was Hashmi Surmi Special. A little golden bottle. I’ve been using surma for more than two years now and I love the look of it. I also appreciate the cooling effect. I have not noticed any adverse side effect.

Smoky eyes! It is a kind of kohl that can also be used on the lids and gives a fine smoky eye effect if artfully smudged.

Using the thin probe which is attached to the cap of the bottle, this surma is applied to the inside of the lower eyelid usually. To achieve the smoky look it can also be put on the inner part of the upper eyelid as well as on the eyelid.

The Hashmi company claims that it has incorporated centuries old, time tested formulations and techniques, high in medicinal values and important precious ingredients, a natural source of nourishment for the eyes. Apparently, it is unisex-I tried it on hubby but even though I had put it at night his eyes looked made up for at least one full day even with lots of washing.

The lead storyAs usual, the US has banned it as they claim it contains high levels of lead. I’m inclined to continue using it though for I am not a big fan of US claims. We use expensive eye cosmetics from the West which do contain far more dangerous chemicals without banning them!

Pros: It looks beautiful and feels comforting. It does not smudge disastrously. But it is easy to smudge to desired effect.

Cons: A warning from the US that it contains lead.
