I read Have Spacesuit Will Travel for the first time over 35 years ago I must have been about 10 or 11. Until that time all the books I had read were required school assignments and were never a pleasure only a chore. I cant recall where the book came from, perhaps from my fathers voluminous library in our finished basement and chances were good I was seeking out a national geographic or something else with pictures that I might find interesting. It may have been the cover (a picture of a seemingly young boy in a space suit, at a time when men had just landed on the moon and Star Trek was my favorite television show) that appealed to me so I began to read. fortunately it was the weekend because I was still reading the next morning before I eventually fell asleep. The tale of a young boy who dreamed of space travel and wins a second-hand spacesuit was wonderful. What could be better you ask? well, just as hes giving his suit its trial run hes picked up by aliens and the adventure begins. The story began my life long love affair with books, opening my eyes to what a pleasure a great story can be. More than 20 years later I dug the old hard cover out of my parents basement and introduced my daughter to the story as well, its affect on her was similar to what it had been on me. Ive reread it recently and while it seems much shorter and easier to read than I recall it was the first time (rightly so) it was still a pleasure. While I would recommend many other books to adults, as a book for a parent to use to introduce his child to the wonders of reading I can think of none better.
