I’d like to start off by saying that pets are not
for everyone. Some people fear them, some are allergic, some are intolerant and some simply don’t have the
time(or money) it takes to properly care for
a pet. These are all valid reasons to not own animals
and if people would recognize this, there would be many less strays and homeless animals wandering about.
Now, this being said, having pets at home can have some terrific health benefits to people. Even growing up in
New York City, I have always had a number of dogs and
cats around me. I love animals in general and cats in particular.
Why cats? Their independence and the dependence.
They can be aloof but still need you to care for them.
They can be indifferent yet show unbelievable affection.
As far as health benefits, pets can enrich a life in numerous ways.
They can be a companion to the elderly
They can be a companion to the young.
They can fill a void in a lonely life
They can bring joy and laughter to a household
They can help teach responsibility and respect
They ask for little in return for their loyalty
They can provide a calming, relaxing mood.
They can provide exercise and activity.
In my opinion, all of the above can contribute to a
happier lifestyle. Let’s be honest, when you are
happy, doesn’t life seem better? Don’t you “feel”
better?
Please be sure that you are up to the task of owning
a pet, caring for it and maintaining it. Otherwise,
it can most certainly affect your health adversely.
Even a simple goldfish bowl, relaxing to watch,
calming, and seemingly low maintenance, needs constant
care.
Yes, it takes some work to care for a pet, but the
rewards can far outweigh the effort. Be responsible
and you’ll be rewarded.
