I have purchased HCL Icon L 74 Model Laptop in April 2011 (Price Rs 22, 000) from Advanced Technology Computer, Indore(The Authorised Dealer and Service Center of HCL Computer/Laptops as well as Toshiba Machines). At the time of purchase of the Director of Advanced Technology Mr Ashish Saxena told me that this model will provide the battery backup of 4.5 hours and he also show the brochure of HCL Icon L 74 model which also claims the battery backup of 4.5 hours. From the day one I realised that Laptop can not work for more than 1 and half hour on battery mode and also the processing speed to compute cannot reached to more than 1.7 GHz(While according to HCL the processing speed of Intels P6200 Processor in 2.13 GHz) when operated with the battery. I have informed this problem to customer care of HCL but as usuall they hold my phone for long time and not able to provide me the proper solution. Sometime they told me that mother board is defective, some times they told me that battery is defective and finally they told me that since "You are using Fedora LI OS we can not help you because our hardware engineers(?) only know Windows OS. By this answer I understand the standard of HCL Computers and their services.
After some research I found out that HCL Computers are using cheap Chinese and below average components to build the Laptops. Batteries, Adapters, DVD RWs are cheap Chinese products(without any Brand Names). In about 3 months of use the Laptop Battery started drains out too fast while running on Battery mode. Laptop was not able to run for more than 45 minutes. Again I informed the customer care of HCL and as well the Advanced Technology Computer, Indore but they are not able to solve the problem. Their so called hardware engineers raise their hands told me that they need 4-5 days to sort out this issue, I have asked him to provide me the alternate machine for work but they were also unable to do that. After too much argument they replaced the battery but backup time was not increased.
Again in May 2012 they battery started draining out too fast and Laptop was shut down in 30 minutes of operation on battery mode. Since warranty of one year expired in April 2012 I have asked the customer care of HCL to sale me Laptop battery. The customer care executive told me that the cost of battery is now increased to Rs 4000/- and you have to deposit Rs 1000/- i.e total Rs 5000/- if you want to purchase the battery. When I was purchasing the this Laptop Mr Ashish Saxena told me Rs 2000 the price of battery and now in one year of time they increase the price Rs 4000/- plus Rs 1000/- .
Now HCL discontinued this Laptop and not providing any support to this mode. So I suggest all of you not to buy HCL Product specially Laptops and Tablets.
