I’ve been using Head and shoulders (all varieties) shampoo for years. My doctor recently diagnosed my condition as "contact dermatitis" and had me switch to Nizoral for sibhorreic dermatitus. Within the a week my condition cleared up.
Last week I ran out of Nizoral and unwittingly started using Head and Shoulders for the 1st time in months. I then started to wake up with an irritated, itchy scalp with painful and bumpy pustules/blisters. I went to see my doctor 4 days ago and I brought the bottle of Head and shoulders with me. After he examined me, he read the active ingredients of my Head and shoulders shampoo. He almost immediately concluded that pyrithione zinc in the Head and shoulders shampoo had caused my reaction. He said that a significant number of his patients experienced the same symptoms and/or exacerbated the very condition that Head and shoulders was meant to alleviate. He told me to cease its use immediately. After 3 days without using Head and shoulders, my condition cleared up.
Unfortunately, I will never use it again.
