Practical thoughts on the Unicorn

I could not have bought any other bike. Reliability and quality mean more than looks to me.

For a 150cc bike this one is heavy and not easy to weave through city traffic. In my college days I used to ride a 400 cc Yamaha through the highways of the US. Even rode a borrowed 850cc, but I never imagined a 150cc would so difficult to handle, but I discovered a secret and I will tell you about it.

First, make sure you are either a gymnast or a well built 6-footer. One shoe size does not fit all, so it is with bikes. This bike is also hard to park and tight to squeeze into tiny spots. It requires regal turning space. The bike is built big, for whatever reason. Also, it rides high; unlike a sports car it has a higher center of gravity, making it difficult to handle - like walking on stilts.

It is silent and smooth. That said, if you get a good mechanic, which may happen if Honda detects it is customer ratings week, they will tune the gearshift and engine to be so smooth it is scary!

The horn is wimpy. When I bought my bike there were no mag wheels - Honda is just another firm that milks its customers to the max; it waited till it just had to provide mag wheels, no sooner.

Dont be taken in by media raves about its fuel efficiency or power, how do they measure it to the 10th of a HP? The best I have gotten is 45KMPL. The engine is torquey even at high speeds, but reaching even 100 is not easy given the obstacles on the road and the traffic. You may get 60KMPL driving slowly in 5th gear, long distances without braking, but then you can probably get 100KMPL.

To its credit, it is stable and brakes predictably. The gearshift is good.

All in all, no complaints except for its suitability in the city.

I tried a couple of other bikes, the Glamour and Pulsar. They were a little different, but cannot comment on the long term reliability or other aspects.

Oh! the secret to better handling - it is the oversized petrol tank that causes problems, I used to fill it to the max each time to calculate the fuel mileage. The high center of gravity creates more handling problems. Fill only to the 3/4 level max, this will give better handling, but still not a sports car feel.

Average and shorter people should probably go for a lighter lower bike. City commuters should go for the Activa(a real pleasure and thoroughly practical).

I’ve had the bike for a year now and it has about 6000KM on it.

Hope this has been useful.
