This book, also made into a film *ing Ben Kingsley & Jennifer Connelly (which I will be
reviewing next week) revolves around three characters.
Kathy Nicolo, recovering from drug addiction and a failed marriage, is evicted out of her family house in San Franscisco due to a bureaucratic error.
The house is bought in an auction by Massoud Amir Behrani, former Air Force Colonel of the Shah of Irans air force. Behrani hopes to resell the house at a profit which will
enable his family to return to the good life they had in the time before the revolution
in Iran.
Lester Burdon, one of the deputy sheriffs who evicts Kathy, falls for her hook, line and sinker. He leaves his wife and two kids and vows to help Kathy to get her house back.
The three charcters come from different backgrounds. Each has their own desires and their failure and/or inability to understand each other leads to a tragic conclusion.
The book is well written and though is very depressing, the characters come across as real. You want the ending to be a happy one but realise that the threads of the
story are so intertwined that nothing but an explosive and tragic conclusion will
suit the story.
Please dont read this if you are depressed, this book does not give hope to the fallen
