Bole To, Total Paisa Vasool baap!
Story
Listen up people....the biggest hit of the year has the greatest story ever.....:
Boy meets girl, they fight; 3 months later they meet again, they fight; 3 yrs later they meet again, they fight; 3 yrs later they meet again, they fight....and so on, until 6 yrs later they sleep with each other, fall in love, and live happily ever after....ever seen such a novel plot? Oh, did I forget to mention that the heroine grows her hair from a fake wig to lustrous straight within these years?!!!
Enough said!
Performances
Rani Mukherjee
She rolls her eyes, scrunches her nose and screams, How sick during the entire first half. Shedding off her jeans and top, she changes into ghagras and saris, adorns heavy jewellery, adds few drops of glycerine in her eyes, sprinkles her smile, and stares into the camera, all the while gaining the tag of the BEST ACTRESS from critics! Awesome!!!
No offence to Ash fans, but seems to me Rani is taking the hint from Rais book in order to win awards and succeed in Bollywood with the minimal of efforts - look perfectly groomed all the time, and have the perfect camera angle.....you will be appreciated without doubt! She did that in Chalte Chalte and she repeats it in Hum Tum!
One of the worst scenes of Rani is when she screams at Saif in the dressing room. Her loudness was beyond tolerance for her hoarse voice and she squeaks in the entire dialogue!
Of course, she looks gorgeous in the second half, but I have already mentioned that, havent I. Probably the only plus point of Rani in this film!
God save us - Rani is the most probable contender for the next years BEST ACTRESS awards for HUM TUM!
My recommendation: Wait for Black!
Saif Ali Khan:
Saif, as the happy-go-lucky Karan, is definitely better than Rani because comedy is his trump card and he delivers the goods as expected!
However, he looks confused in the second half, and his chemistry with Rani is average!
There is nothing much more to say about him because you have seen this Saif in Dil Chahta Hai and Kal Ho Na Ho.
My recommendation: Go watch EK HASEENA THI!
Supporting Star Cast
Among the supporting star cast Kiron Kher steals the show as the lovable Punjabi mom. Ironically, she brings in more freshness to the film than her younger colleagues. After playing an emotional mom in Main Hoon Na, Kher proves her versatility with an utterly natural performance in Hum Tum.
FOllowing her is Isha Kopikkar. Although she appeared in only two scenes she shone. Watch out for the scene when she is drunk!
Rishi Kapoor and Rati Agnihotri are satisfactory.
Songs and Choreography
I never regarded Hum TUms album highly. But, after watching this film, I must admit that the songs are the cutest parts of the film.
Ladki Kyun and Aankhon Me Humko are picturized beautifully.
Gore Gore is irritating because Rani cannot dance without distorting her mouth, making her look like a fish gasping for air!
Chak De is a fun number.
How believable - Shining Moments from the Film
Riya and Karan meet in a flight. During the 3-hr flight Riya gives get lost dirty looks to Karan, and prevents all his efforts of getting to know her better. Still, she roams all around Amsterdam with him within flights. (BTW, I never knew you could tour the entire Amsterdam in hours).
Riya hops from Paris to America to India with ease....she gets Visas for herself AND her mom so easily, and even finds work without thinking. Hey, I want to live in Alaska - perhaps I should join the cast of Hum Tum!
Throughout the film Riya gives the image of a conservative girl, shunning any talks about the private aspects of love and shady guys like Karan....hell, she slaps him in the beginning for just kissing her......however, she sleeps with him towards the end, and expects him to confess his love and marry her! Hmm!
Riya applies MEhendi to her hands just before Gore Gore, but its either completely dry before the song starts (Where can I find this magic Mehndi), or the wet Mehendi does not leave a single mark on her face or her dress (amazing!).
Overall rating:
3/10.....0.5 for Saif, 0.5 for Kiron Kher, 1.0 for the songs and choreography, and 1 for the cartoon characters appearing between scenes.
These cartoons were not only a novel promotion technique but their dialogues were also more interesting than the screenplay of the movie!
But, like I mentioned early on, Hum Tum was total paisa vasool for me.....bole to, free me tape dekhne ko mila re!
I am sorry for my incoherent review. But I was extremely annoyed that I had wasted 2.5 hrs over this nonsensical film! Please forgive me
