Hum Tum(2004)
Producer:Yash Raj Films
Director: Kunal Kohli

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherji, Kiron Kher, Rishi Kapoor, Jimmy Shergill, Rati Agnihotri etc.
Although me and my friends are quite off for watching Love stories but since it was a Sunday evening and we had nothing to do we went to Drive-In watching Hum Tum. Hum Tum is Kunal Kohli?s second film after the flop Mujhse Dosti Karoge under Yash Raj Films banner and it, once again it his second love story. Expecting it to be the same old formula of girl meeting boy, boy and girl falling in love, boy being separated from girl etc etc in a love story we had expected the same in Hum Tum as well. But it is somewhat different.
STORY/PLOT :
Well since I have selected a current movie and ?plot somewhat revealed? option I would not give out the whole story, just a brief introduction of characters and the story.
The story begins with Karan Kapoor(Saif Ali Khan) who is a cartoonist sketching a series of cartoons in The Times of India under ?Hum Tum? title. Hum is a boy and Tum is a girl. With this series of cartoons and based on his experiences he writes a book and I wont tell u why he writes a book. At press conference Karan is being asked by a media person bout any girl in Karan?s life and then we have the Dil Chahta Hai type?s flashback of 9 years be4. Karan is going to US for studies. Rati Agnihotri is his mom and Jimmy Shergill is his bro. in the same flight on the next seat he meets Rhea Prakash (Rani Mukherji) who is also going to US for the same and who?s mom is Mrs. Parminder (I think) (Kiron Kher).
First meeting of Rhea and Karan is in the flight. Then they become friends and roam around in Amsterdam during the halt. But they then start hating each other and swear never to meet again. Then after 6 months they meet again in New York and no once again they don?t start loving each other. Now after 3 years they meet in Delhi and it is Rhea?s marriage. Mind u there was/is still no love between them.
Then once again they meet in Paris after some gap but at that time a lot of things had happened in Rhea?s life. In Paris is also the introduction of Karan?s dad Rishi Kapoor who is separated from Karan?s mom and is a fashion photographer. Karan learns about the happening s in Rhea and genuinely becomes a friend of Rhea?s. The rest of the story is for u to watch out in the movie?
Performances:
Saif Ali Khan: Is at his usual best. He looks and acts good in these bubbly kinds of roles of playing a person who always keeps on saying ?Ladki Kyoon Ladko jaisi nahi hoti?. Playing a flirt in this movie as well and then giving some serious dialogues suits him well.
Rani Mukherji: Is also at her usual best. Loves playing serious kinds of roles after Saathiya and Mujhse Dosti Karoge and does well in acting. The chemistry and confrontation between Saif and Rani Mukherji in the movie are fun to watch.
Kiron Kher: Plays a role of typical comedian Punjabi mother. She does well in doing the comic scenes. Timely dialogue delivery with correct expressions suits her role well.
Rishi Kapoor: Was a surprise. Enters playing his favourite song Mein Shayar to Nahi. Looks cool in a French beard and does well as Karan?s dad giving him timely advices.
Rati Agnihotri: Has a guest appearance for the whole movie. Comes in some scenes does not come in others. Has acted average. Not too good not to bad.
Jimmy Shergill: Has a small role to play and he also in average. The French beard doesn?t suit him at all. Does ok.
Well there are other few guest appearances as well like that of Abhishek Bachchan and Isha Koppikar and they both have acted well in the small roles they got to play. If u want to know what they were in the movie then see the movie.
Music:
After a long time we have Jatin-Lalit working under the Yash Raj banner. After DDLJ and Mohabbatien I felt that the music had to be good from Jatin Lalit but well the music is average. The only catchy song is the all famous ?Ladki Kyon Najane Kyon?? and the romantic number ?Hum Tum?-the title track of the movie. Rest songs are all average.
Conclusion:
All in all a good comeback attempt by Kunal Kohli. Somewhat different from the usual love stories. The first half is pretty fast and the second half is somewhat serious. Do watch the scene in the second half in which the serious confrontation between Rhea and Karan takes place at a party. The cartoon stripes in between the movie are also good to watch. Worth watch a movie once..
