Worst of both worlds

I know that quoting P.G Wodehouse at the start of a hindi movie review is a lil outta hand, but what he once said describes the problem with this movie perfectly.

The great master mentioned that there are only two ways to make a story. One he said is like his, where u make life a musical comedy and are light, refreshing and hilarious, and the other is where u go deep down inside life and dont care a damn.

Any effort in mixing these two genres, unless by a genius can cause a melodramatic, mixed up disaster. That is what this movie is.

It held promise, I give you that. It even made a huge effort to deliver, but somewhere along the way, it just lost itself and created a mashed up movie with hardly a story.

Lets start with the good things.

The look is refreshing. A lil tacky at times, but pretty easy on the eyes.

Saif. He delivers an ok performance, nuthin great, but is definitely very easy on the eyes.

The sidekicks are lil more fleshed out than expected, which in itself is a pleasant surprise in a place like bollywood where everyone but the main actors are mere caricatures.

The story looked like it could go somewhere, which must be mentioned as a plus in this era of mindless mush. Of course the fact tht it totally lost track of the destination is a different thing.

I must mention that some scenes are very well acted, like the part in the car with jimmy shergill and rani alone. The discomfort is very convincing. good stuff. A few other good acting moments can be found. A sign, that at least the actors made an effort.

The animation part was creative, gotta give em tht. Not good, just creative.

Now on the flipside, we have a huuuuuge plot problem. There isnt any. After a point, its just stupid.

The movie’s pace starts to flag badly, and u feel very frustrated by the end.

Then there is what I mentioned at the start, the movie tries to be light hearted and sentimental at the same time. These things just dont mix. There are no genuinely funny moments, and the silly dialogues simply work to foul up ur mood. There are cliches galore and too much melodrama to be able to digest.

Editing is a problem. They try to be all kool (yeh, its gotta be with a k for them) and do the whole flashy cutting from one scene to another bit. But its hardly consistent, when u see the long drawn out ending and too many flashbacks at the end.

Rani is wooden, and Isha horrible. Jimmy seems a lil genuine, but cant deliver. Saif is his usual bubbly self, but not very convincing this time. Maybe he always needs to be overshadowed by another character to give a good performance. Kiron Kher is pretty sweet and has done a good job. Rishi kapoor looks like a disaster.

This movie was touted as ’india’s first date movie’... I would take my bf to the theatre for this one, but only cos it’ll mean we wouldnt be interested in watchin it at all.

All in all, didnt do it for me. Might for some others, its worth it to just try it out once.
