I had the privilege of traveling from Rajiv Gandhi Intl. Airport on the opening day, March 23, 2008. I have booked a taxi from my house Malkajgiri, which is about 45 Kms from airport. Now, this is quite far compared to what we are used to when the airport was in Begumpet.
Any international or domestic airport is usually located away from the city. Why? So that it won’t bother the residents. I don’t want to be disturbed every 10 minutes with the loud noise that the aircraft generate during takeoff and landing. So anyone who complains about the distance must understand that just for the sake of few thousand traveler per day, it is not justified to let the others suffer. However, the irony is that people are purchasing residential plots around Shamshabad because of the airport. It just beats me.
Coming back to my travel arrangements to Shamshabad, the taxi service by Radio and Meru travels is excellent. They are very polite, and honest. In fact, once I was given a refund because the driver took a long route because he got confused. It cost me about 800 rupees, which is quite costly. So, if you are traveling in groups then it is better to hire a taxi together. Aero express is not a good option for someone who is traveling international or with a lot of luggage. There are only 4 or 5 pickup points in Hyderabad, which must be increased.
It is easy to locate the entrance once you reach the airport. Though there was no one to guide me to the check in counter, it was not hard to find. In fact, there is a ’help’ counter where one can inquire about check in and other facilities.
Immigration was just a breeze; compared to begumpet where there usually is a big line, immigration in the new airport was efficient and quick. The security check too was quick and easy.
Baggage pickup is much more efficient. It still takes a lot of time to get your baggage, but I think it is because of the stupid custom duty employees who scan and mark each and every bag.
There are few stores inside, but I think more will follow in near future. The restrooms are clean and well maintained, and I hope they are maintained well in future too. The design and architecture is very good. It gives an impression of a good international airport. The staff is pleasant and helpful.
Overall I liked the international airport. I am pretty sure improvements will be made to make it much better.
