When I initially came to Mumbai, I passed by lots of supermarkets and thought well, probably not bad. But I was very disappointed with the product range, congestion of both shelves and people and always always the cleanliness. Reliance, D-Marts are filled with more staff (who are too busy singing, gossiping or screaming) than customers, and the products are covered in dust. In Hyper - very clean.
And then, I discovered Hypercity! I was exhilarated! Finally, a place I find everything I want at the best prices ever! I am willing to spend a few extra bucks for everything they offer. But thats point I dont even have to. For eg. Papaya costs at the "subzi walla" 25/kilo in Hyper - 19/kilo.
Watermelon - Sabziwalla - 25 to 40/kilo, hyper- 8 to 12/kilo! Moong dal - local wholesale 75/kilo, hyper - 55/kilo. And to top it, they have all sorts of fruits that would be available anywhere in India at that time - Mulberry, Jackfruit, caped gooseberry, jamba, dragon fruit, etc. etc.
What I dont like - lack of knowledge of the staff (cant blame the supermarket that is what you have all across India). Items that run out of stock is not replenished for months on end.But the customer service is very helpful (they have actually called me back, when they said they would.Excellent household shopping especially for expats. Great shopping (for what Mumbai has to offer)!
