You wake up and find yourself all alone, and you hear nothing but the birds chirping and no sign of humanity around you, it’s like a dream which you hope will end soon, but you never know when. This is the kind of dilemma I’ve faced many times, and then you really think is this all worth it, the luxuries, money, freedom, and everything that matters which makes us a human being,
This is the subject what Director Francis Lawrence has taken upon himself with a team of excellent Writers Mark Protosevich(screenplay) and Akiva Goldsman(screenplay) New York City the city that never sleeps imagine it with no one around, cars parked grass has grown on the roads, shop’s open and no one in sight, and suddenly you see a car whisk by – would you be surprised, scared or just ignore it, but Dr. Robert Neville(Will Smith) and his buddy Max(the brave dog), trying to stay alive in a city which has no one left, except wild animals, and Zombies – a terrible Virus that turned humans to Zombies, it feels like Rambo meeting Resident Evil but this is much scarier – these Zombies come out in the dark, they cannot bear any kind of bright lights, when the alarm buzzes on Will’s watch he knows it’s time to shut the windows seal the door and make sure his gun is loaded.
Every morning Will and his companion Max drive down to the DVD rental store, where mannequins are placed and he talks to them puts back the rented DVD’s and takes new ones, comes home cooks lunch out of tin cans and goes down to his basement where he has a fully fledged lab where he tries to find a cure for the Virus, In order to find a cure he seeks out the infected, who only come out at night, and hoping to correct mans mistake. "Legend" was the first truly scary movie Ive seen in some time. Realism is the main factor in scary movies in my opinion. If it can happen, than thats pretty scary. Also, Smiths portrayal of despair and borderline insanity of three years of seclusion added to the effect. With the exception of his dog, Smith had no live contact with constant failure attempts of his cure only leading to his insanity. It had a "Cast Away" feel to it with his dog as to Hanks volleyball and his house reminding you of that stranded island. Theres an effective use of flashbacks that partly tell us the story of how we got to where were at in this grim New York City; and the flashbacks also serve to give us an overwhelming contrast between Life Before and Life After the apocalyptic disaster wiped out the city. Yet use of flashback was sparing, which I found all the more effective.
The end of this movie is the key to the whole story, what you would do if you were Dr. Robert Neville, how far you would go to save and bring back people(Zombies) and make this planet what it was before, there is a quote that I remember at this moment - In three words I can sum up everything Ive learned about life: "IT GOES ON" There is a lot you can learn from this movie – and there is also a lot other actors can learn from Will Smith, you will definitely agree on what I just said when you watch I Am Legend.
