IIT Guwahati - The Sixth and the youngest IIT (Don’t call Roorkee the youngest please). Quite - amazingly beautiful campus landscape, few architectural marvels under construction, a handful of determined - brilliant minds and bagsfull of hopes. Thats it.

INFRASTRUCTURE
It does lag behind....coz it takes time to build huge campuses and massive buildings. And if you don’t want to compromise for anything but the best.
The Academic complex is almost ready and that would solve all the disparities on the academic infra front.
Sports is still thumbs down.....the SAC won’t be ready before 2003 end.
Hostels are something we can instantly be proud of. 5 are up and 6, 7th ones in progress.
Big single rooms with huge glass paned windows and large private balconies...this is sheer luxury.
Not to mention the topography of the campus. It is breathtaking in the most literal sense. Hillocks and water bodies are dotted all over. You just need to climb on any of them to get a magnificent view of the Brahmaputra encircling the campus from three sides (or better still the ferry rides from the city to the campus can entice poetic instincts even in turbo nerds)
Trees are few and small as all plantations are post mid 2k (that’s when the campus became residential)
FACULTY AND CURRICULUM
The exact quality of the faculty is still unknown. All HODs and senior profs are very very renowned in their fields of research. How the newer ones are going to fare .....don’t know. They are young ...understand your viewpoints better and have cool teaching methodologies.
But how much all this means....don’t know!
Curriculum is very contemporary ......which only means good.
LOCATION
An IIT in North east raises a few eyebrows........security? .....Not a concern. Never ever figures in the students daily thoughts. Same sense of freedom ..similar mindset bearing college students around.
Interaction is cool.......take a break terrorists!
STUDENT LIFE
Lesser number of students are no excuse to maintain a sub-standard lifestyle. That results in dynamism in daily life which is almost fluid.
Interaction among the entire student community and with the faculty is very intensive. Most of the competitive events are at the inter batch level (you have the inter hostel events too....but they lack the characteristic fanaticism ) . Though things might change soon as number of students increasing exponentially and can’t be put up in the same hostel.
Since a rigid system is not in place your individuality counts. Have a great idea which needs a complete overhaul of current procedure...go ahead. The Dyro (himself an iitian) has a very creative brain and that means getting things done are that much easier.
The placement scenario is pretty good. Almost 90% got offers last year despite the general economic situation. And people are going stanford, berkely, MIT.
