Hate me for this, but Inception is definitely not one of Christopher Nolan’s best works. Frankly, I expected a lot more. But all said and done, it is an interesting watch as you scroll through the corridors of infinite consciousness layers.
Complex film making is one thing, concept driven another and then you have Nolan’s style that brings out even the most simple concepts in a complex manner, and sometimes the most complicated theories in a simple way.
The plot needs no introduction here, and I’ll avoid it here for the ones who have not seen it yet - don’t want to spoil the fun.
Being a fanatic Human Psychology, spirituality and Philosophy student, I know all about the Dream Psychology and the mind games being explored here (film has some factual flaws, but excused), so there weren’t many surprises. Watching Inception is like seeing Matrix meet James Bond with a punch of metaphysics and psychic stuff (astral projection). Loaded recipe ... a lethal combination.
The output is great, the product delivers but only to a certain extent. Just when you start feeling the pinnacle, and it’s building up to take you to that Enigma moment - the Eureka feeling- it drops, numerous times through the film.
Something is missing. What? It’s too PREDICTABLE! That’s the issue. Call me a psychic, but I knew what’s following next. And the even the last sequence with the totem, which leaves an open ended question - we all knew it’s coming, right? That’s the trick - confuse the viewer, make him wonder, and leave some questions unanswered. It always works - without doubt, because we crave for mysteries.
And the plot - call me crazy, but I would rather take help of a hypnotist or a pysychic to plant a thought in someone’s mind.Trust me, it’s not rocket science. Don’t we all keep impacting eachother with our ideas and thoughts on a daily basis. but this is also excused, as I enjoyed the workings of the mind, the mazes and the dream architectire and all....
The human consciousness needs unsolved mysteries to keep the interest in life alive. And Christopher Nolan knows that obvoiusly. A genius he is, and I salute him for that.
He serves the perfect stories with the right mix of clarity and confusion - the one way to make even cliches look intriguing.
Don’t get me wrong -I loved Inception. But I expected it to grow and reach the pinnacle - it had the potential to be Nolan’s Schindler’s List. From Memento toThe Dark Knight - Nolan has been brilliant, and Inception is no exeption.
Inception is a must watch...just that personally I was a bit - only a bit disappointed. ProbablyI know too much about the concepts and the mind to enjoy Inception. My head’s in the way I guess.
