Indian Express - Many Editions, Less Teeth

The Indian Express, which is now named as The New Indian Express, with the word ’New’ in small prints on its masthead is a good paper. Its Sunday Edition is very good, particularly the page featuring a foreign country. Now it has nineteen editions, including an edition coming out from Bhubaneswar (Orissa). For the Bhubaneswar Edition some of my former students are working. The IE Bureau Chief at Bhubaneswar is well known to me, but he avoids any interaction with me for reasons best known to him. I was the Manager of the Chandigarh Edition of Indian Express during December 1977 and August 1978, when I left the paper for an assignment under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. My Chandigarh days were very brief indeed, but I gained very valuable experience in all aspects of newspaper management including space selling and competing with formidable competitors like The Tribune. My Chandigarh experience stood me in good stead at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, and at its Branch in Dhenkanal, Orissa, where I was the Resident Director. Newspaper Management is a tricky job. I and another colleague of mine, a former journalist at the Indian Express, Chennai, used to teach Newspaper Management at IIMC, New Delhi, by telling the students all about ’How Not To Manage A Newspaper’ with actual examples from our own experience. I did the same thing at IIMC, Dhenkanal. The late Ramnath Goenka was an institution builder. He had an eye for profit in any venture. Once during an informal discussion, I asked him a blunt question like this. The Indian Express had some brilliant Editors like Moolgaonkar and Kuldip Nayar, but it never acquired the status of a Number One paper in the country. Why ? He became grave and asked me to substantiate my statement. I told him that in the east, it was ( and is ) The Statesman, in the north, it was The Hindustan Times ( and The Tribune too ), in the west it was The Times of India, and in the South it was The Hindu. Where is Indian Express. He was visibly annoyed and retorted by saying that I was a baby in newspaper management. I said that the logic behind my statement was so simple that even a baby can understand it. The late Goenka was a very arrogant person, and often used to show his outburst of temper. His only son, the late B. D. Goenka was a very pleasant person. Whenever BD used to visit Chandigarh, his path was not to cross with that of RNG. Wherever Indian Express used to be published, RNG was also buying and developing real estate there. He was in this endeavour a past master. When Arun Shourie came to Indian Express, he started writing very long articles in his own difficult style, and not in newspaper English. The Editorials, Articles and Features in the IE were and are good, but they never matched with those of The Hindustan Times, The Times of India, The Hindu, and The Deccan Herald. The newsprint used in IE is of inferior quality. Photojournalism in IE is not encouraged. I am sorry that I am sounding like a pessimist, but my intention is to improve the paper. Why not ? With all that I have written, I will never disappoint the Bureau Chief of IE Bhubaneswar, if and when he asks me for a piece. Good Luck, IE.
