Wheres your Fire ? Wheres your IE?

Okay, I admit the line Indian Express uses to sell their newspapers ain’t all that catchy. However, they seem to be the only paper out their reporting NEWS! Left, right and centre other newspapers are writing ’’advertorials’’.

Started way back in 1959 by the one and only (now legendary too) Ramnath Goenka, the Indian Express has always maintained a strong Editorial style. It has a kind of a brash image, always ready for a confrontation. Ppl often say about the Express that this paper has made and brought down governments. The paper definitely plays an important role in forming public opinion and keeping the errant government in check. The Bofors scandal under the Editorship of Arun Shourie during the Rajiv Gandhi regime was an excellent example of how important newspapers can be for keeping the government in check.

The recent Petrol Pump scandal once again proved that the Indian Express is the market leader amongst English Dailies in India. The best part about this paper is that it is sooo brash that it had the guts to publish a report on the front page about the entire bench of the Supreme Court of India accepting free mobile handsets and hugely discounted service offered by MTNL at a time when MTNL is a party to a case being heard by the SC. Considering how the Justices in India tend to take that ’’My Lord’’ thing literally I thought maybe this time IE has over-done it a bit. But lo ! Behold ! The very next day same paper, same column reports that the SC has refused the ’’gift’’ after perusal of Indian Express’ comments. This coming from the same bunch of jokers who put Arundhati in Tihar for the night.

Remember back when the paper who got the story first was the leader ! Pity nowadays the papers that publish gossip about their ’’in-house’’ events and feature scantily clad females all over their newspapers are the ones minting money.
