Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU) was established in the year 1985 to promote an effective distance education in the country and facilitate education to mostly working people so that a working professional can continue study along with his or her professional activities. In these 30 years, it has emerged as the largest university in the world imparting distance education in varieties of specializations.
Scope: IGNOU offers a wide range of education in social science, general science, technical and management courses. It includes bachelor as well as doctoral degrees. The number of programs offered by it is close to 150 as of today. It also operates in foreign countries like UAE, UK, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Quwait, Nigeria and many others. Study centers: Study centers are available in almost all cities in India and some in the foreign countries. Students can get admitted on line and course fees are quite affordable too. Qualified teachers from local institutions are hired to deliver classes in the study centers and terminal examinations too are conducted in these study centers under the supervision of local administration of the study center. These study centers also act as evaluation centers.
Administration: The Honorable President of India represents the Chancellor of this university and renowned academicians are appointed as the vice chancellors(VC) from time to time. Prof. M. Aslam is currently the VC of IGNOU.
Recognition: Degree issued by IGNOU is recognized by almost all organizations including government as well as private sectors.
